Singapore will hold some of the competition’s events in a temporary pool in a car park, with some sources saying costs in the initial hosting bid were underestimated." Well that will look great on photos of the event and the videos, swimming in a car park!! 😲🙄🤣 Apparently this is costing $100m!!! I can think of better things to be doing with $100m! Can't you. The topic of sustainability in the hospitality and tourism industry in Singapore was discussed a fair bit in the media over the past week - with announcements of sustainability-enabled hotels being operated At Changi Airport and Punggol. I was asked to ponder if this was a trend in Singapore. My thoughts on this are, we have moved way beyond the ‘trend’ stage to almost being the norm. Sustainable Tourism is serious business. Most countries have aligned with the UN SDG. Our very own Singapore Tourism Board has 3 primary sustainability focal areas – becoming a sustainable urban destination; building a sustainable tourism sector and showcasing our sustainability efforts. In terms of hotels, there is the global sustainability certification issued by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Most of the major hotel groups/brands are already members of this council, including the Accor group; Four Seasons; Hilton, IHG, our very own Marina Bay Sands, Pan Pacific group and Ascott. Over time, we can expect to see more hotels becoming GSCT-certified. Therefore, any new builds (hotels) should already strongly incorporate sustainability features. This is probably an expectation now. The two main drivers in this push to sustainable operations: a. globally, countries are taking concerted and concrete steps to ensure sustainability is practiced in their economies; b. the international traveller is recognizes the importance of sustainability and are intentional about ensuring travel is carried out in a sustainable manner. So hotels and resorts do not have much of a choice and have to operate with clear practices and policies that are undergirded by the principle of sustainability. #sustainability

You talk to someone that is plugged into the startup scene.** I was therefore looking forward to catching up with my friend Ee Chien Chua as I knew it would be inspiring conversations. We decided to check out the latest Coconut Club outlet at New Bahru and he came totally dressed for the occasion! As fellow foodies, we wanted to see if their amped up version of nasi lemak with fried quail was worth all the hype. The verdict? It's good but not sure if it's worth $21, as there is less meat than the classic chicken leg. Just as the Coconut Club reimagines traditional food with a modern twist, we discussed the latest in innovative concepts and venture building ideas. In particular, my mum, sister, and I had a heated discussion about one of the featured men. He is a divorcee in his late 60s with three kids. He has been living alone and has not been in contact with his kids for years. In fact, he leaves his front door open because he fears that his dead body would only be discovered when it's badly decomposed. When my mum saw this, she did not understand why his kids did not initiate contacting him. She said, “They are unfilial.” I don’t blame my mum for having such a viewpoint. In her world view, children caring for their elderly parents is a given. I commented, “Actually, I think parents should not expect that their kids will take care of them when they are old.” To which my sister nodded in agreement. My mum was furious. She commented, “Why did I give birth to the three of you in the first place?” There are reasons why I made that comment, so hear me out Sometimes, it is not that children do not want to take care of their elderly parents; they just cannot. Maybe, they have their own family and just can't afford to? Maybe, they are also sick and are just physically unable to? And maybe, there is no relationship to start with? Instead of judging the kids who did not reach out to that old uncle, I believe that a healthier way to look at this sensitive topic is to evaluate our roles as parents and children and openly discuss this with our family members. Personal Opinion: In my opinion, as parents, we shouldn’t have expectations of our kids taking care of us when we're old. The parent-child relationship is built on unconditional love, not obligations. My wife and I have decided that if we have kids, we want to ensure that we do not require them to take care of us financially when we are old. Yet, as kids—especially within Asian families—there’s a cultural expectation to provide for our parents in their later years. Both my wife and I have decided that we want to make sure that we have the resources to take care of our parents if needed. Of course, it would be best if our parents were fine on their own, but that is not the reality for many Singaporeans. Shout out to the 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Of course, this isn’t something that often comes up in financial planning discussions, but it’s crucial to consider. Preparing the necessary resources to ensure our parents are well cared for is an act of love and respect that goes beyond mere duty. I’m curious to know your thoughts on this. Do you believe children should be responsible for their ageing parents? Or should parents make provisions for their care without relying on their kids? There are two things here that I don't like. But before I get into that lets add my personal bias and context into this so its clear. 1. I really love #Singapore my adopted home that has helped me build a business and life that is incredibly good 2. I really dislike when journalists use language or words that they know are incorrect or have huge bias within an organization that claims to have none. Linda Pressly actually writes well in many ways here, you can tell there is some depth to the report unlike some output we see from the beeb. The problem is it is laced with an unquestioned assumption that western ways are better, that the colonial power has got their shit way more together. I think it was Lee Kwan Yew himself who tore into a BBC reporter many years ago to confirm he has no interest in a drug traffickers human rights, the human rights he protects are those of Singaporeans who would inevitably get caught up in the orbit of the crime and violence that follows drug use and abuse. The person referenced here knows the crime, knows the likely time and yet still was stupid enough to do it or get caught depending on your view. There's a repeated implied view that the approach in Canada, UK or California is somehow better, based on what metric? As for language. The word draconian means excessively harsh. How can a well communicated and understood law with publicly published sentences be harsh? Harsher than what? When I come into land at Changi later, just at the point the wheels are coming down, the announcement will be paid, reminding every passenger on every flight of the penalties for drug trafficking and giving an opportunity to not commit the crime even if they're all in up that point. That seems pretty fair to me

Thinking of where to bring your young kids in Singapore? Ditch the expensive indoor playground, say Hi to Mother Nature! We headed over to Rifle Range Nature Park on the public holiday last week. With Singapore being so small, it's refreshing for the kids to get so close to nature. Best way to burn their energy & guaranteed a good nap after that. Bring along mosquito repellents, some refreshments to fuel up. This is so suitable for young child, 3 years old and above, any younger, you might have to carry them in a carrier. Just like financial planning, anything worthy requires investing daily. We invest in our kids daily, depositing into their lives in different ways, big and small. Parents, what are you investing on?
