RISING business costs, manpower shortages and the need for transformation ranked as the top concerns for Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), based on the latest annual survey by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) “Sentiment among respondents about this year’s business outlook is mixed,” said SCCCI president Kho Choon Keng, as he previewed key survey findings ahead of its full release later this year. Rising costs are the biggest concern in 2024, cited by 73 per cent of businesses, followed by manpower availability (54 per cent) and business transformation (37 per cent). The top two concerns remain the same as last year, but concerns over uncertain economic and political conditions abroad – which ranked among the top three in 2023 – did not make the list this year.

Singaporean telco M1 ditches 70 percent of legacy IT in cloud migration Part of multi-year transformation project Summary: M1, a Singaporean telco, is set to shut down up to 70% of its legacy IT systems by the end of 2024 as part of a multi-year digital transformation centered around cloud migration. Led by CEO Manjot Singh Mann, the telco has already transitioned all of its post-paid, pre-paid, and fiber broadband customers to cloud-based systems. M1’s journey toward becoming a cloud-native company began in 2019, and by 2021, it was already 90% cloud-native. The company adopted a greenfield strategy for its cloud migration, which involved building systems from scratch on the cloud. It also reduced its number of applications from 300 to just 30 and consolidated over 200 databases into a single data link. This transformation was facilitated by partners like Infosys and AWS, with M1 also utilizing platforms like Salesforce and Snowflake for its customer service, sales, and data management. The remaining 30% of legacy systems, focused on corporate applications, will eventually be decommissioned as part of the overall transition. 💖✨ BEYOND THE SERVERS: HOW A TECH TOUR REDEFINED INNOVATION FOR ME 💖✨ My first company tour in Singapore was an enlightening visit to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Joint Innovation Centre (JIC) at the IMDA PIXEL Innovation Hub. This remarkable collaboration between AWS and IMDA supports Singapore-based tech companies by providing access to cutting-edge AWS technologies and resources, enabling them to create and scale innovative solutions. The speakers and workers shared profound insights into AWS's forward-thinking company philosophy. What resonated most with me were their 16 leadership principles. These principles are not just statements but core values that drive their operations. I was particularly inspired by three principles: Deliver Results, Strive to be Earth’s Best Employer, and Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility. The principle of "Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility" emphasizes that with growth and success comes an increased duty to act responsibly and thoughtfully. Leaders must be humble and considerate of the impact their actions have on local communities, the planet, and future generations. AWS's dedication to this principle means they recognize their immense influence and strive to use it for good. They start each day with a determination to improve, to make better decisions, and to be more mindful of their environmental and social impact. This commitment to leaving things better than they found them is deeply inspiring and highlights the profound role that responsibility plays in their operations. AWS’s commitment to sustainability is particularly inspiring. They have set ambitious goals for sustainability by 2030 and have already made significant progress. The AWS "Well-Architected Framework" is a testament to their dedication to efficiency and environmental responsibility. This framework helps businesses build secure, reliable, efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable workloads in the AWS Cloud by providing best practices and consistent measurement tools. Although this field is not my major, the significance of AI in our daily lives is undeniable. I engaged actively with the speakers, raising multiple questions and gaining invaluable insights into this transformative technology. The tour at AWS JIC was a profoundly inspiring experience, igniting my passion for innovation and sustainable practices. The Global IT outage struck last week just after QED's session on 'AI & The Workforce,' reminding us that humans are still the ultimate backup system... no fear! 🤖💼 At our latest session, we teamed up with our friends from Workforce Singapore and LinkedIn to dive into implications, risks and support for the workforce resulting from the rise of AI. This time, we shifted our focus and conversation to a more Human and Business view. Our star-studded ✨ panel featured business leaders from both private and social services sectors that gave us a lively discussion with plenty of insights from all sides! With the help of our panelists with the attending business leaders and owners, here are some nuggets of insights we uncovered: 1️⃣ Operational Efficiency & Automation: Turns out, AI’s biggest impact will be making our operations smoother and automating tasks, rarely revolutionizing business models or creating shiny new products. 🤔 2️⃣ Susceptible Roles: The most vulnerable jobs? Data entry, processing, patter recognition, and data analysis. Surprisingly, high touch work like chefs, drivers, and care-giving roles seem safer for now. So, start developing some cooking skills 😅 3️⃣ Help Wanted: Leaders are all for AI handling repetitive tasks and analysis, but not so hot about AI making decisions just yet 😉 Guess we’re ready to delegate the work, but not the responsibilities just yet! 4️⃣ Value Creation: AI brings the most value by boosting efficiency, but it’s not exactly a revenue growth machine nor able to significantly enhance customer experiences. Back to our global IT outage last week. This reminded us of one crucial fact: when tech fails, it’s the humans who save the day. This underscores the need for a symbiotic 🤝 relationship between AI and our (human) workforce. Moving forward, we need to harness the best of both worlds—leveraging AI for efficiency while cherishing the irreplaceable human touch that keeps everything running smoothly. 💪 Our utmost thanks to our wonderful panelists - Kwang Cheak Tan, Anand Sachdev, Goki Muthusamy, and Ann Ann Low! GovTech Singapore, the technology arm for the Singapore government, is leading this charge with LaunchPad, a comprehensive AI platform leveraging services like Microsoft Azure and OpenAI. LaunchPad empowers government agencies to explore AI's potential, access prototypes, and exchange insights. This collaboration has already yielded over 400 ideas and 20 prototypes, including Appraiser, a tool that is revolutionising testimonial writing for teachers. Meaningful collaborations with governments continue to be a top priority for Microsoft, as we focus on scaling AI innovations to uplift communities and drive positive change in the era of AI. I’m certain this is just the beginning of even greater things to come for transformative innovation in Singapore’s Public Service.
