SK Hynix Commits $14.5 Billion to Build a DRAM Line In Cheongju SK Hynix will commit 20 trillion won ($14.5 billion) to set up an advanced dynamic random memory (DRAM) chip fabrication line in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, in a reversal of its original plan to produce NAND there. The M15X line will be located next to the existing M15 line and will be dedicated to producing DRAM including high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. Construction is scheduled to start this month and be completed by November 2025. Early mass production will also start simultaneously. SK Hynix said it plans to invest 5.3 trillion won to build the plant and at least an additional 15 trillion won to purchase chip equipment for the new line over the long term. As a global leader in AI memory chips, SK Hynix plans to expand investment in its domestic manufacturing base, which is the foundation of our competitiveness, the company said in a release Wednesday. Through the investment, SK Hynix plans to contribute to the vitalization of the Korean economy as well as elevate the status of Korea as a chip powerhouse. As for relatively mature DRAM like DDR4 and DDR3, Samsung plans to maintain production capacity at pre-reduction levels or even gradually phase out DDR3 from the market, expanding its procurement strategy. Samsung Electronics Elec plans global job cuts of up to 30% in some divisions, sources say 💡 #Samsung Electronics, opens new tab, the world's top maker of #smartphones, #TVs and #memory #chips, is cutting up to 30% of its overseas staff at some divisions, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. #SouthKorea-based Samsung has instructed subsidiaries worldwide to reduce sales and marketing staff by about 15% and the administrative staff by up to 30%, two of the sources said. The plan will be implemented by the end of this year and would impact jobs across the #Americas, #Europe, #Asia and #Africa, one person said. Six other people familiar with the matter also confirmed Samsung's planned global headcount reduction. SK hynix and Samsung Electronics Reportedly to Reduce Legacy #DRAM Production like #DDR4 💡😱 As #SouthKorean #memory giants #Samsung and SK hynix announced their third quarter financial reports, posting a 112% and 94% year-over-year revenue growth, respectively, the threat from increasing output of #Chinese rivals such as ChangXin Memory Technologies, Inc. , which drives prices down, has reportedly prompted them to significantly cut back on legacy memory #chip production, according to the report by the The Korea Economic Daily Daily. According to the report, China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (#CXMT) has been ramping up the production of older chips like #DDR4 and #LPDDR4X, resulting in severe price pressure in legacy products. CXMT has expanded its monthly DRAM production capacity from 40,000 wafer sheets in 2020 to 160,000 sheets. This capacity is expected to reach 200,000 sheets by year-end and 300,000 by the close of 2025, the report said. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix Delay Production Increase in Standard #DRAM, #NAND for Specific Reasons 💡 Despite the onset of what many in the industry call “Semiconductor Spring,” #Samsung Electronics and #SKhynix are not resuming production increases. As of May 20, both companies maintain a conservative approach toward ramping up production of standard DRAM and NAND #chips. Industry expectations had suggested that both firms might plan increases this year as #semiconductor conditions improved. However, during their Q1 earnings call this year, both companies subtly communicated that “there will be constraints in DRAM production bit growth this year,” indicating they will continue with reduced production levels. The market for standard DRAM and NAND, excluding #HBM, remains uncertain. With the upcoming U.S. #elections in November and potential changes in economic policy and trade regulations with #China, the industry remains cautious.
