We're excited to share key takeaways from our recent Masterclass on Climate Stress Testing, held last Friday. This engaging session, led by experts Lepeka Garg (Climate Risk Management) and Ruchi Sangal (Climate Stress Testing), focused on discovering the risks of climate change to businesses, preparation strategies, and mitigation techniques. Here are the key takeaways: 🌡️ Climate risk is unique: Unlike traditional stress tests, climate risk assessments deal with longer time horizons and unprecedented scenarios. They encompass both physical risks (e.g., extreme weather events) and transition risks (e.g., policy changes, technological shifts). 🇸🇬 Singapore leads the way: The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has been proactive in addressing climate risks. Their 2020 guidelines emphasize the need for robust governance, scenario analysis, and transparent disclosures in accordance with frameworks like TCFD. 📊 Data is key: Effective climate risk stress testing requires new types of data, including climate hazard projections, emissions data, detailed geographical information of assets, and transition risk drivers such as policy implementation and carbon pricing. 🌐 Real-world impact: We explored a case study demonstrating how extreme weather events could disrupt global supply chains across technology, consumer goods, and industrial sectors. It highlighted the need for strategies like diversifying suppliers and investing in resilient infrastructure. 🔮 Looking ahead: As climate risks become more pronounced, financial institutions must develop sophisticated modelling capabilities and integrate climate considerations into their risk management frameworks. Collaboration between banks, regulators, and climate experts will come to the fore. Climate risk stress testing is becoming an essential tool for financial institutions to ensure resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
