📌 3 ways scientists ARE good with people Sure, our backgrounds may be more bench-facing than people-facing, but that doesn’t mean we’re disadvantaged when expanding our networks, or can’t start a company. In fact, scientific training gives us some surprising advantages when it comes to connecting with others. Here are 3 reasons to put yourself out there this holiday season: 🌎 Culturally adaptable. Years of training in international labs makes scientists great at adapting to different working styles to get things done. Putting yourself out there beyond your usual network is just another border to cross. 🤝 Collaborative by nature. Science’s biggest questions require “open-book” collaboration to tackle (think The Human Genome Project, CERN, or the Structural Genomics Consortium). Approaching others with trust and mutual respect makes networking feel less transactional - and more genuine. 🧩 Pattern recognition. Spotting patterns and relationships is a superpower in research - and it’s just as valuable for understanding networks of people in a complex ecosystem. It helps you quickly figure out how everything (and everyone) fits together. Did I miss any out? When you think of your scientific mentor, what makes them great with people? PS. Missed Parts 1 & 2? Now, I’m building Rosalind Dx in Singapore and sharing my journey to encourage more scientists to become founders.
