Today, we welcome Alexander Liu to the MSIG Asia family as Vice President, Cyber and Financial Lines, reporting to Andrew Taylor, Senior Vice President and Head of Cyber and Financial Lines. Alex brings over 20 years of global experience in reinsurance and underwriting. His expertise in crafting customised solutions and managing international relationships will play a pivotal role in enhancing our offerings across the region. We were thrilled to be part of the renewal ceremony of the collaboration between our Mitsui Sumitomo Head Office and the DIY Regional Government for the Paliyan Wildlife Sanctuary restoration project. This partnership, ongoing for nearly 20 years, was officially reaffirmed on 3 December at Gedhong Pareanom, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. 🤝🌳 Since 2005, we have planted approximately 300,000 native and fruit trees over 434 hectares. Additionally, MSIG has supported twelve elementary schools in educating local communities and school children about environmental management. The renewed agreement, which lasts for another three years, also includes planting an additional 10 hectares along the Gowang River. Deputy Governor KGPAA Paku Alam X expressed appreciation for our corporate responsibility program, highlighting its focus on reforestation and community education. He also stressed the importance of enabling local communities to actively participate in preservation efforts through the understanding of social, economic and environmental benefits of the project. Minako Sakuma, Managing Executive Officer, said "We are very heartened to see the achievements of all partners coming together and we are excited to continue this meaningful work. This collaboration has not only contributed significantly to the reforestation of Paliyan Wildlife Sanctuary but has also played a crucial role in educating and empowering local communities. What an incredible weekend for our MSIG Asia team at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon over the weekend! 37 colleagues took on the challenge, racing from 5km to the full marathon, showcasing resilience, determination, and team spirit as they crossed the finish line! 🏃♂️🏃♀️ The journey to race day was just as inspiring. Over three months, our staff club ran a fitness campaign that brought the team together. These shared moments of preparation played a big part in ensuring everyone finished strong, safe, and proud. 💪 A big thank you to Tata Consultancy Services for inviting us to join the Corporate Challenge and to everyone who cheered or supported behind the scenes. We are incredibly proud of our ERM colleague, Annie Nhat Anh Tran, for being selected as a finalist in the 2024 cohort of International Insurance Society's Leaders of Tomorrow programme! 🎉 Her insightful paper, “The X-Factor Unlocking Insurance Growth in Emerging Markets”, explores the unique challenges and opportunities within the insurance sector, using her home country of Vietnam as a case study. Key highlights from Annie’s paper include: ⚠️ Despite immense potential, many emerging insurance markets remain significantly underdeveloped. This is evident in the large insurance gaps, unhealthy competition, immature corporate risk cultures, and critical talent shortages. 🔑 Strong leadership is the ‘make-or-break’ factor in addressing those challenges and unlocking the full potential of these rapidly growing markets, particularly leadership from CEOs and top-level executives. Key qualities required for growth leaders are long-term vision, technical and risk management skills, courage, empathy and passion. 🌍 Each emerging market presents distinct challenges and cultural contexts. By creating a healthy market environment, promoting qualified professionals, and investing in continuous learning, all market participants including regulators, investors and corporations can play their parts in cultivating the next generation of insurance leaders.
