#PR and coverage - know the reality: If you are in #publicrelations, whether agency or client-side as #communications lead, you should know the #media world is changing, fast. The good old days of spamming hundreds of journalists and getting tons of coverage is over. Why? 1) Shrinking media - Due to the diminishing returns of the media world, where #advertising revenue is harder and harder to come by with businesses reluctant to spend as before, and with free social media and alternative media providing FREE #news to audiences, there is consolidation of media - which means LESS media for coverage to appear in. 2) Smaller newsrooms - From (1), journalists now have to do more, with less. Layoffs are common and journalists double up as photographers, videographers, video editors, etc. This means there will be lesser interest to pursue deeper stories like the good old days. I was an editor of a tech magazine before in the good old days where we actually tested and toyed with hardware. Today, I honestly don't see much (or if any) such experiments and testing at any media, including tech media in our side of the world. 3) Profit-seeking - From (1), more media are seeking sponsorships and PAID coverage, which in PR terms, would NOT be considered "earned" coverage. However, put yourself in the shoes of a media owner. If nobody advertises, and if nobody pays for coverage, how would such a media keep up its operations of space, infrastructure, human capital, and utilities? It is about reality. Your businesses are purely about profits, and so are the media. Some businesses have become more enlightened to the changing media scene, especially in #Asia, and have gone from a "quantity" (as many coverage as possible) to a "quality" coverage approach. What does this mean? It means looking at how best to marry the best media interests with the best strategic fit of the business' products, and to pursue a good feature, especially a comprehensive or long feature, rather than a "blurb" or "name" mention only. It is more hard work, and certainly looks like less numbers on a dashboard, but the mindshare and branding will be much more compelling. The world is changing, fast. Are you keeping up?
