Many companies looking for breakthroughs struggle to move beyond incremental ideas, because cognitive biases trap people in the status quo and prevent them from seeing big opportunities. But four tactics can help firms overcome biases and think far more creatively: Science fiction. Sci-fi writers have foreseen all kinds of innovations. When Lowe’s invited some in to envision its future, it got ideas for augmented reality phones, service robots, 3-D printing, and other new technologies that boosted sales. Analogies. These can help innovators make big leaps too. For instance, when Charlie Merrill applied the analogy of a supermarket to the brokerage business, he changed the industry. First principles logic. Often it helps to reexamine foundational assumptions and rebuild from the ground up. That’s how Regeneron cut drug development costs 80%. Exaptation. Why do we use something for one purpose and not another? Asking that question led to the creation of the Flex-Foot, a revolutionary prosthetic that doesn’t look anything like a foot but acts like one.

Change Fatigue is something that we all deal with. Especially with the Sales Engineering side of the house, we have to understand the market positioning, competitive threat, the nuts-and-bolts of the new technology, how our company implements it and most importantly, how it impacts our customer from a value and a disruption basis. Jay Patel, Avaya's GVP of Engineering, covers the impact of Change Fatigue and Avaya's Innovation Without Disruption philosophy in this article in Channel Buzz: https://lnkd.in/g6KhjpSZ Last week, I was able to experience Innovation Without Disruption first hand with Aura X and Avaya's integration with Zoom Workplace. All I had to do was logout of my personal Zoom account, and into the Avaya Domain, and I how had access to all of the Enterprise Zoom features that Avaya subscribes to, and full access to the phone system, features and reliability that I expect from my Avaya phone system. And all IT had to do was point the Aura Device Services to Zoom, add Zoom to our SSO, and patch one application. No rip off the band-aid and the underlying wound to get world class AI assisted collaboration. And it was done at 1x for our entire enterprise! I am convinced: Innovation without Disruption is not just a moniker, it's a core offer philosophy at Avaya, making it easier for our customers to adopt new tech without the Change Fatigue!
