Bihar has recently faced a troubling series of bridge collapses, with at least 12 structures failing across the state within the past 17 days. The latest incident occurred on Thursday in the Saran district, marking the third bridge collapse in the area within a 24-hour period, according to District Magistrate Aman Samir. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the most recent collapse, which involved a 15-year-old bridge over the Gandaki River. This bridge was an essential connection between villages in Saran and the neighboring Siwan district. Although the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, officials have mentioned that recent desilting work could have been a factor. These collapses follow Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's recent directive for a comprehensive survey of older bridges in Bihar to identify those needing urgent repairs. This initiative aims to improve bridge maintenance policies, involving both the road construction and rural works departments. The pattern of collapses, not only in Saran but also in other districts like Siwan, Chhapra, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj, is concerning. For example, in Deoria, a 40-year-old bridge's pillar sank, leading to its collapse. Similarly, newer constructions like a 5-year-old bridge in Tewta and an under-construction bridge in East Champaran also failed, with locals alleging the use of substandard materials. The frequency and spread of these incidents have raised significant concerns about infrastructure safety, particularly during the monsoon season when heavy rains could worsen vulnerabilities. Europe’s New Mega-Tunnel refers to the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, an ambitious infrastructure project currently under construction to connect Denmark and Germany. It will be one of the world's longest immersed tunnels, stretching 18 kilometers (11 miles) beneath the Baltic Sea.
