Instructive for every European, from consumer to car maker, to read the highly positive review by Steve Fowler of Geely's new EV small car it has cheekily named the Panda (although Stellantis will have something to say about that). Looks like it fills the huge, glaring market gap left -astonishingly - by Western car makers, for a seriously cheap but practical 4-seat(just) BEV city car; but one capable of doing slightly longer journeys (124 mile claimed range) and up to 50mph on highway. And all that for what may well turn out in the UK almost to match the price of Citroen's £7.5k-plus, max 30mph, 2 seat, 50-mile range Ami quadricycle. In terms of European producers, next step up from Ami will be Dacia's EV Duster coming in the summer - at £15k- plus. It's time to up the game, chaps. For the many well-intentioned consumers refraining from buying Chinese on principle, the temptation to succumb is poised to become far, far harder to resist.

Volvo is bucking the industry trend with strong sales growth and a significant increase in EV adoption. While many automakers are facing declining sales and slower EV uptake, Volvo Cars, a brand of the Geely Group, is reporting impressive gains. In October alone, Volvo achieved 61,686 global sales, marking a 3% increase from last year. Year-to-date figures are even stronger, with sales up 9% to nearly 623,000 units in the first ten months of 2024. Electric vehicles are a major driver of this growth. Volvo's EV sales have surged by 61% to almost 147,000 units, meaning nearly one in four Volvos sold globally is now electric. Plug-in hybrids have also gained traction, with a 13% increase to 140,000 units. By contrast, sales of mild hybrids and combustion engines declined by 5% to 336,000 units. Europe remains Volvo's largest and fastest-growing market, where sales rose 21% in October and an impressive 30% year-to-date. EV sales in Europe doubled, reaching just over 113,000 units, positioning Volvo to meet the EU’s stricter 2025 CO2 limits. Meanwhile, U.S. sales saw a modest decline of 4%, totaling just under 99,000 units, while sales in China fell 9% to 127,000 units. Following record EV mix in September, BEVs still captured over 94% of the market share, reaffirming Norway's commitment to sustainable transportation. This is a testament to the country's robust EV incentives, charging infrastructure, and the public's environmental consciousness. Our performance highlights: 👉🏻 Strong EV mix for both brands: Lexus 100% and Toyota 76% 👉🏻 BZ4X best selling car in Norway 👉🏻 Lexus volume growth 32% year on year. Morning news: Tipping point for #electric #cars reached in #China. >50% PHEV & BEV last month. Given China’s key role as a automotive market accounting to almost 40% of all new global car sales and 60% of all electric cars sold globally in 2023 is thus further solidified. This is not only relevant from an #automotive perspective as China has also reached peak oil demand in 2023 and has slightly reduced its #oil imports from #Russia, Saudi Arabia etc since then. We live in times where technology, energy and geopolitics are fusing together rapidly.

Volvo Cars has revised its plans to stop selling internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, citing slow progress in charging infrastructure and the removal of purchase incentives. The company now anticipates its lineup will consist of at least 90% electric vehicles by the end of the decade, including battery-only and plug-in hybrids, with up to 10% potentially being mild hybrids. This shift is in response to evolving market conditions and customer preferences. Despite regulatory pressures in Europe to transition to electric vehicles, the adoption of electric cars has faced challenges, including the abrupt withdrawal of purchase subsidies in Germany and insufficient charging infrastructure. Richard comments on article "OEM tactical registrations could hit long-term used values, reports INDICATA" Saying: "Tactical registrations by car manufacturers impacted the used car market with sales of less than 12 month old used cars increasing by a massive 39.1% year on year in April per figures from INDICATA. Whilst this points to supply levels being close to pre-covid levels there are some concerns about the impact this will have on used car values moving forward if the trend continues. EV’s are likely to take the biggest hit, with dealers registering but not wholesaling these vehicles. Today I would like to point out, what we as users of cars can do to support the CO2 reduction strategies of the car manufacturers. Their development is in the right direction to reduce CO2 immediately with the demands from the market. The political requirements to change to BEV is just a populistic idea, because you have to drive more than 150.000km to even accumulate the CO2 produced during production. Additionally Lithium has to be pumped up with the little groundwater in Deserts to get it to the surface. BG can support to keep the expected and developped CO2 value to keep it same over lifetime.

New on the EU vs CHINA EV: proposed import tariffs Based on the European Commission’s ‘investigation’ into the subsidies the Chinese automakers they receive from their own government, they propose import tariffs: BYD: 17,4% Geely: 20% SAIC: 38,1% These three were sampled from the automakers that cooperated — those that cooperated but not yet sampled will be subject to the 21% weighted average duty. The EV makers that were not cooperating with the investigation will be hit with 38.1%. There is a special note about Tesla, too: "Following a substantiated request, one BEV producer in China – Tesla – may receive an individually calculated duty rate at the definitive stage." The “substantiated request” is likely what we wrote about in one of our previous EV Universe issues, as Tesla was disappointed it's tariffs would be averaged by Chinese automakers that receive subsidies, while it doesn't receive said subsidies itself.
