➡️Where SAFe and I don't agree⬅️ To make it clear from the start, this is not a clickbait title to start another pointless rant about SAFe. I sometimes feel that bashing each others preferred tools is all we do in the agile community nowadays. Instead of helping our clients solve problems. I'm an early adopter of SAFe. I still remember the 'Implementing SAFe' course (to become a SPC) I did in Mannheim: 3,5 days of training, followed by the exam in a classroom at the end of the fourth day. They didn't have an online exam environment back then. I registered my 65th course to teach a few days ago. I have been involved in over a dozen SAFe implementations. I definitively don't know everything, but I do think I have developed the ability to say meaningful things about SAFe over the years. So I thought it might be valuable to create a series of posts about topics where my experiences deviate from the SAFe theory, or anti-patterns I discovered. It's going to be relatively small items, no 'SAFe is not agile' nonsense. And of course most value doesn't come from what I say but from our combined experiences. So comments are more than welcome. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 The one I want to share in this post is a part of PI Planning. At the end of the first day SAFe proposes the Management Review and Problem Solving meeting. Actually SAFe's intentions are well here, but the title can lead to an anti-pattern I discovered: managers remembering the first part about 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 and forget about the 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 part. Often this meeting is used by managers, who often didn't even actually attend the PI Planning's first day, as an opportunity to express their opinion about the plan. Nothing is more demotivating than people having spend all day to come up with a realistic plan, only to be criticized. "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem". It is supposed to be a 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 workshop. Often, the draft plan has some flaws and risks. The goal is to 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧. So please, Scaled Agile, change the name into 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱. The picture shows a 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 example of a problem solving workshop. It's about 19:00, all teams went home after a long day... the group of attendants are the development manager, RTEs, the marketing manager, architect, and another high ranking manager. They are looking at the draft plan of one team who clearly over-committed in an attempt to stick to the backlog priority. After considering alternatives they decided to propose to sacrifice a high priority feature to help the team achieve a more realistic plan. That's a management decision, but one intended to help.

If low, foster communication and support team growth. 1️⃣1️⃣ Innovation Rate: Balance creativity and delivery. If low, dedicate time to R&D and experiments.
