LEGO was my favorite Christmas present as a kid. This design work came from Maccy, our newest Senior Designer. Maccy decided to visualise Hybrid Anchor’s performance as a LEGO graph. A fun infographic and a nod to the Danish connection between BoConcept and LEGO. When we first started working with BoConcept Scotland, they had pulled in 66 leads from their website over a six-month trading period.  Two key milestones we wanted to highlight are the 5x increase in leads within the first six months of working with us (that’s a 500% boost in leads). Massive! BoConcept could have stopped there and said, “Thanks!” But instead, they chose to partner with us long-term, working together to achieve even bigger goals. With crystal-clear data and a website optimised for lead generation, they’re now seeing a 33x return (That’s a 3300% increase from where they started). Spectacular!! Was the old website bad? On the surface, it didn’t seem bad at all. It was built by a Glasgow web agency and looked like it should perform just fine. But as the saying goes, looks can be deceiving. This is exactly why we advocate for our Website Video Audit as the starting point, for £250 +Vat you are going to see all the good and the bad as a show and tell. Then you can make an informed decision about what to do with that information. Who else should we be speaking to? We’d love to help someone else boost their leads next year. And while we might not buy them LEGO, they’ll have plenty of profits to splurge on their own. 😉

I've appreciated Ida's beautiful design shift exploration over the summer - from solving to serving, from building things to building relationships, from consumption to contentment. At university over 10 years ago, studying industrial design, these are just the kind of nudges I would have loved, instead of (or at least alongside) design for large scale manufacture, commercial product design (most of which were marginal improvements on products that don't warrant more material extraction and labour), and designing for hyper-convenience and frictionless experiences that encourage the role as mindless consumers. Looking forward to the first event (Oct 28th, 6pm) on the topic of "designing for contentment over consumption". Let's (un)learn together for a more regenerative, collective and peaceful future.

Lego vs Ikea. What do they have in common? For starters, their products are instantly recognisable. Both descend from Nordic nations, both champion “modular” designs—and both have something I absolutely love: their instruction manuals. (Yes, I’m a geek, but hear me out.) These manuals are the perfect example of how powerful infographics can be. When I mention that I design infographics during a pitch, I usually get one of two reactions: 1️⃣ A blank stare: “What even is an infographic?” 2️⃣ A polite-but-skeptical: “Our product can’t be turned into an infographic.” Let me tell you—everything can be infographic-able. It's up to you to discern what is worth making into an infographic and what isn't. Just look at Ikea and Lego’s manuals: ✨ They tell a story. You start with the parts and finish with a Death Star or a bookshelf. Infographics work the same way—they tell a process or story visually. ✨ They’re clear and visual-first. Minimal text, bold visuals. Even a 10-year-old can follow them (and a 70-year-old too). Infographics simplify and clarify your message. ✨ They draw you in. Ikea manuals show all the pieces you need (even screws are scaled 1:1 so you know you’re using the right one). Great infographics grab attention and make details effortless to understand. ✨ They’re stripped back to essentials. Every element serves a purpose. No fluff, no clutter. Perfect infographics do the same. Infographics help your audience instantly get it. Whether it’s a product, process, or idea, visuals cut through noise and leave an impression. Shoutout to the designers behind Lego and Ikea manuals—they’ve mastered clarity, storytelling, and simplicity in a way we can all learn from. (Also, who wouldn’t want to build a 7,500-piece Millennium Falcon?) I wholeheartedly agree with Linus Sebastian's perspective on the current state of AI. It is absurd how many companies are exploiting the term "AI" to overhype and inflate the prices of their products and services. This practice misleads customers into believing that these offerings involve far more advanced technology and effort than they do. This issue is particularly evident among companies that market technologies as AI, despite these technologies (mostly machine learning) having existed for nearly three decades. This deceptive marketing undermines genuine innovation and creates a distorted perception of technological advancement.

🐘 Let’s talk about an elephant in the room (one of many): without the right business models and incentives to support it (and let’s be honest - economic, social and cultural transformation), our attempts to move towards regeneration and use business as a force for good are massively limited. Since intentionally reorienting my design practice towards climate and social impact, I’ve continuously felt the urge to go upstream to the business model and financing, because no matter how good our intentions are, these are genuine constraints and influences that at best restrict our potential for positive impact, or at worst, outright incentivise the opposite and perpetuate the very harms we want to prevent. I’ve met many people on this journey who’ve made the same realisation. Yet, with all the talk of regenerative business models, I craved more action and application. So I was very happy when Victor Lopes Mascarenhas published the Regenerative Organisation Canvas [ROC]! It’s an attempt to take the standard business model canvas that we all know and fill in the gaps around inputs like energy, materials, funding, and suppliers, outputs like waste and environmental/social impact, as well as take a more critical look at the effects of revenue models, ownership, and the people the business serves and who it doesn’t - to better identify and implement the transformations and changes we need to make in organisations to accelerate the transition to regeneration. For the last 2 months, I’ve been working actively alongside Victor and Micha Nicheva (another talented designer and strategist) to try and turn theory into practice and test this and other broader offers out with organisations. We’re still in the early stages of defining the right audience to start with, crafting our offer(s) and positioning it effectively, but we are committed to learning in the open and learning from you, the community to bring this forward. So to share our progress, our latest thinking and initial experiments, and have an open dialogue about it, join us at the next Regenerative Ripples session this Thursday (14:00 CET). Last week's Circle ⭕ Session was hosted by Helene Schalck and took us along an unexpected deviation of the well-worn path of journey mapping. Helene introduced our group to a new method of journey mapping that most of us were unfamiliar with - journey atlases. Put simply, a journey atlas is different to a traditional end-to-end journey in that it's an index of several existing journeys rather than a single overarching end-to-end journey. During our discussion we debated the pros and cons of journey atlases to better understand how each one might help or hinder our ongoing efforts to simplify how we communicate complex information. The key considerations I found most useful were: 💰 Commercial journey mapping tools are prohibitively expensive and fall short when it comes to mapping and managing journeys at scale across several teams. While tools such as Excel and Powerpoint are more time consuming to use when it comes to mapping, they are a better option for ensuring accessibility and engagement with journey maps because of their relative ubiquity within large organisations. A beautifully mapped journey is useless if it's too difficult to find, access or understand. 📊 A journey atlas is a useful tool for mapping 'as-is' journeys but not for 'to-be' journeys. As-is journeys are more common in day-to-day journey mapping and are more likely to represent existing operational processes that have been in place and unchanged for a while. Mapping KPIs and metrics to an as-is journey is relatively straightforward**. To-be journeys are slightly less common in day-to-day mapping and are more commonly used in innovation projects. To-be journeys are far more likely to undergo rapid and significant iterations over a short period of time depending on the outcomes of several rounds of research. Relevant metrics and KPIs are yet to be identified and in a lot of cases don't yet exist. ** based on the very broad assumption that the relevant metrics and KPIs exist and are being accurately tracked - a topic for another post! 💻 Journey atlases seem to be a great tool for engaging key stakeholders by helping identify gaps and assign different priorities to specific areas of the business, support resourcing and capability decisions and contextualise initiatives that are happening across different teams. That said, how might adding yet another layer of complexity onto an already complex mapping process affect our own ways of working and design processes? Will creating a journey atlas make our jobs easier by reducing duplication and making things easier to find? As someone pointed out during our discussion, designers love to map things out - perhaps a little too much. Do journey atlases increase the likelihood of 'overmapping'? Thank you Helene Schalck and Marc Fonteijn for a fantastic session, as always I came away with far more questions than answers.

AI has the power to deliver magical experiences. That may be true, but even Hogwarts had rules so who keeps the runaway tech in check? A superhero taking legal action of course. OK, I’m aware that Scarlett Johansson only plays an Avenger, but that brilliantly highlights the ‘influence’ behind Open AI’s latest GPT-4o voice assistant. CEO Sam Altman originally entered into talks with Johansson about using her voice to create the new persona but she declined. Then the latest update debuted with an eerily similar voice and a Tweet (X!) from Altman with the single word “her” – the chatbot played by Scarlett Johansson in the 2013 movie of the same name!!! This is a wonderful example of humans holding other humans developing AI platforms and products to account. It is essential we champion IP when it is all too easy to take spectacular human originality and achievement and repurpose it without thought or consequence. 🔍 Making Sense: A Universal Design Approach to Neurodiversity 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of attending a thought-provoking workshop led by Cathy Dalton at the Universal Design Workshop 2024 in Oslo. The session focused on the intersection of Universal Design and the unique needs of neurodiverse users in the built environment. Key discussion points included: ✅ Understanding the overlap between existing Universal Design practices and the requirements of neurodiverse individuals. ✅ Exploring the synergies and potential conflicts in designing for sensory sensitivity and sensory disability. ✅ Navigating through the wide array of design recommendations from various user groups to create cohesive, inclusive solutions. This workshop highlighted the critical need to balance the diverse needs of all users, ensuring environments are not only functional but also empowering and accommodating. By “making sense” of the complexities of design standards, we take a step closer to creating truly inclusive spaces. The insights gained from this session have inspired me to further explore how neurodiversity-focused design can seamlessly integrate with Universal Design principles to improve the quality of life for everyone. 🌍✨ Let’s continue this important conversation—your thoughts and experiences in this area are invaluable! Team Engine x Team Franklyn… couldn’t have asked for a better crew to build a bolder brand with :) Congrats to Engine – the B2B travel brand that handles all aspects of business travel – on their re-launch (and their recent valuation 😉) And now for the design nerdery. To make a modern travel brand, the Engine digital experience is necessarily exceptional – so the mandate for the brand was to be product-seamless and equally systematic. The thesis undergirding the identity system is that brand and product are one and the same. From dynamic, shape-based modules to typographic hierarchies, motion, icons and illustration usage – each element functions equally well whether in app, online, offline, in and out of campaigns and advertising. And on stickers. Let's not forget stickers. It was a thrill to get into product land with our Engine pals. Larger case study coming soon... and don't look now but made it all the way through without an engine pun 😚
