Our churn rates have historically been between 5-7%. In March I got together with the team and asked, what small things can we do to change this? We went through reviews, talked about user experiences, and then started implementing minor UX changes and implementing improvements that would probably not be even noticeable to most. There were a few hiccups along the way, some changes we had to almost immediately roll back. Some of this can be attributed to some big tools I released like zipper and knife, but for the most part, it was a lot of little things. In my first years of monetizing (nearly 10+ years ago, my churn rates would be around 20%). Anyways, it worked, and last month we broke the 5% line. Our NPS scores are hitting new highs. Sometimes the difference between good and great is not that large. The crazy thing is, we are only maybe halfway through our list. #startups #GIS #mapping

Yesterday we had another meetup at Smidig, The Norwegian Agile Community. You can find us at Meetup if you want to join one of our meetups in Oslo. Not all our meetups are in English, but yesterday's event was and we had Timoté Geimer speaking about 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆. One of the questions that came up was: "𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀?" Timoté Geimer shared that reflection and questioning yourself is important. Just the fact that you are questioning if you have a bias is contributing to you awareness. This in addition to discussing with others help you discover new perspectives. We all know that our thought patterns can sometimes become fixed as we keep ourselves in a comfortable and known thinking pattern. Knowing this is an awareness we can use to take a step back, take the observer mode and ask different questions. I believe that 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 and 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 is key. This combined with making 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 from a place of curiosity, openness and being non-judgemental will help take us in new directions. Self-leadership - that was one of the topics in our last internal conferences at my employer. Two reflections from that sessions are autonomous decision making and owning your own 1:1. - Decision making. As a manager, how do I enable and support my teams, pods and individuals to make decisions autonomously? Some examples include creating a culture where autonomous decision making is rewarded, provide direction and alignment, set clear expectations and accountability. I think this is one of the best signs of productive and healthy teams. My goal is to be able to go on vacation for 5 weeks and it pretty much goes unnoticed and teams perhaps being even more productive 😅 - Recognising self-leadership. I think one of the best signs of direct reports actively practicing self-leadership is that they take ownership of the agenda in their 1:1s without turning it into a status reporting meeting. At Slush last week, I heard some investors received over 1,000 meeting requests. It’s a staggering number 😶 I couldn’t help but feel amazed. When I sat down with VCs focused on AI, their amazement matched mine. They were impressed that we’ve built our own AI with our own team, rather than relying solely on tools like OpenAI or Google APIs. In a space where 90% of AI startups use pre-existing platforms, this distinction stood out. There’s nothing wrong with applying AI to create value—many startups do it brilliantly—but it’s clear we’re talking about two very different skill sets: - Applying AI: Innovating through existing tools. - Building AI: Creating the models and systems that push boundaries. Both approaches are vital, but they deserve separate recognition. As the AI field grows, perhaps it’s time to celebrate these unique contributions in their own compartments. For founders, the real magic is in creating something remarkable, not in chasing popularity. 💫 #AI #Startups #Slush

One of the highlights for me this past year has been the partnership with TeamPilot.io. John Cannerborg and the team have many years of experience in matching freelancers with companies. And now I have a way of actually helping my big network of independent contractors looking for their next gig. It's not a secret that the platform hasn't been full of assignments lately. The market has been dryer than anything I've experienced before. But there are signs of a comeback. And last week we went live with a project where we are looking for 6 remote fullstack developers for a customer. 🤩 (We can't handle anymore applicants for that assignment now though.😅) Hopefully this is just the beginning! It's great to see that there are so many candidates who have registered a profile on TeamPilot. And we love talking to new and existing customers about upcoming projects. But isn't it a bit boring only doing so online? We think so (even though we are remote-first) and have something exciting planned in Gothenburg to kickstart the fall. OKRs and OKR systems kill companies: 🍋 They produce misleading and irrelevant "information". 🍋 They consume lots of money and lots of time. 🍋 They induce gaming, fear and lack of transparency. 🍋 They obfuscate performance. 🍋 They deviate attention from the business. There is a better way of designing performance systems that: 🌶 requires no planning or budgeting 🌶 requires no target-setting or target negotiation 🌶 eliminates "fake indicators", "cumulative indicators" and other BS 🌶 makes team performance comparable to other teams' performance 🌶 makes company performance comparable to external benchmarks 🌶 actually puts decision-making power back where it belongs: into teams that do the work 🌶 makes books "open", produces and maintains transparency, forever 🌶 makes reporting fast and understandable 🌶 reduces cost of reporting and performance measurement by 80 to 90%, easily This way of designing performance systems is called #RelativeTargets.
