I'm happy to share the second lecture from the MCTDH workshop at Department of Physics, Stockholm University, where we dove deep into multiconfigurational methods for many-body quantum physics! In the second lecture, we explored all the main functionalities of the MCTDH-X software, including relaxation, time evolution, and observable calculations. The workshop combined both theoretical insights and a hands-on tutorial, and the full series will soon be available on the ultracold.org #YouTube channel. The 2024 IEEE Nordic Circuits and Systems Conference (NorCAS) will take place in Lund, Sweden on October 29-30, 2024. The conference will be co-sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and Tampere University. The submission system is now open and the submission deadline in on August 15, 2024. Special Sessions for NorCAS 2024 can be proposed by June 15, 2024 by email to [email protected]. They will be added to the paper submission system once approved by the conference management. To propose a Special Session, send the proposed session title/topic, organizer(s) name, affiliation and email, a short paragraph on the rationale of the session, and the names and email addresses of five proposed (PhD level) reviewers for the papers submitted to the session. We expect at least one of the organizers to participate in the conference to chair the session if accepted. Special Session papers will undergo similar reviews as any other papers submitted to the conference, and presented papers will be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore database. We also take proposals for half-day tutorials (at 13-17 on Monday October 28, net time about 3h), on timely digital, analog/mixed-signal, communications, or System-on-Chip topics. The deadline is the same as for special sessions. Nice thought experiment and execution on many visualizations of the same data: change in the number of World Heritage sites from 2004 to 2022 in three Nordic countries. Clearly, the data is better presented here as a table with a third row/column showing percentages, as shown on the About page, but getting to 100 certainly takes some creativity. #datascience #dataviz #datacentricity

In this talk, I will discuss how interactive #visualization and #visualanalytics can be a key enabling technology for creating such HCAI tools in practice. Visualization has already been shown to be a fundamental component in explainable AI models, and coupling this with data-driven, semantic, and integrated interaction feedback loops will enable a human-centered model for integrating AI models in the loop with human users. I will present several examples of our past and current work on such HCAI tools, including for creative writing, visual and #UXdesign, and computational notebooks. I will then draw parallels between these tools to suggest common themes on how interactive visualization and visual analytics can support the design of future HCAI tools. Speaker Biography: Niklas Elmqvist (he/him/his) is a Villum Investigator, an IEEE Fellow, and a full professor in the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Denmark. He received his Ph.D. in computer science in 2006 from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Prior to joining Aarhus University, he was faculty at University of Maryland, USA from 2014 to 2023, and at Purdue University, USA from 2008 to 2014. From 2016 to 2021, he served as the director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) at University of Maryland, one of the oldest and most well-known #HCI research labs in the country. He received National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER and Villum Fonden Investigator grants and several best paper awards. He was papers chair for IEEE InfoVis 2016, 2017, and 2020, subcommittee chair for ACM CHI 2020 and 2021, and papers chair for IEEE PacificVis and IEEE VIS in 2024. He joined the VIS Steering Committee in 2023. He is also an associate editor for International Journal of Human-Computer Studies and the Information Visualization journal. In addition, he serves as series editor of the Springer Nature Group Synthesis Lectures on Visualization. His research has been funded by US federal agencies such as NSF, NIH, and DHS as well as by companies such as Google, NVIDIA, and Microsoft. He received the Purdue Student Government Graduate Mentoring Award (2014), the Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teacher Award (2012), and the Purdue ECE Chicago Alumni New Faculty award (2010). He was elevated to the rank of IEEE Fellow in 2024 and ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2018.

I’d like to break down barriers and expand our scope. Many researchers in the community aren’t aware that we publish more than just fundamental physics research. We liken ourselves to a large marketplace of ideas with many well-stocked stalls. We’re looking for all physics-related research — materials, biophysics, chemical physics, astrophysics, climate physics. The list goes on. In an effort to publish more climate-related studies, we recently introduced a new subsection that focuses specifically on climate physics, mitigation, and renewable technology.

Queer Futures of AI: call for speakers Interested in a full day of presentations, discussions, and other activities about queer perspectives on the futures of AI? Join us on November 21st in Uppsala, Sweden. Queer Futures of AI gathers scholars in AI, digital humanities, gender and queer studies, and related disciplines for a trans-disciplinary dialogue about queer perspectives on the development and implementations of AI, and what possibilities, constraints and risks, that likely, and possible, AI futures may entail. Previous research have highlighted several problems with AI from gender- and queer perspectives including issues of identity, privacy, surveillance, bias, and fairness (see e.g. Scheuerman et al., 2019; Ashwin et al., 2021; Danielsson et al., 2023). Drawing on such insights, Liliequist and colleagues (2023) argue that queer theory can be used to identify where risks may arise and to find new ways of building AI technologies and systems for inclusive futures. In this event, the aim is to both make space for queer theoretical dialogues and explore how queer perspectives can contribute to AI studies and development. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for selected speakers. Arrangements will be made by the organization so that the speakers are not expected to preliminary pay for expenses themselves. Considering the current climate crisis, priority will be given to speakers favouring sustainable travel options. Uppsala is less than an hour away by train from Stockholm, which is well- connected. Good advice. You can seriously wreck your reputation if you propose some Tasmanian devil algorithm. But I admit that I feel torn about it. Two of my most impactful algorithmic ideas were inspired by other fields. The gender-based genetic algorithm (GGA) for algorithm configuration is the first example. We saw that a genetic algorithm should work differently when comparably few function evaluations can be afforded. This happens in nature as well. Bacteria create a new generation every 20 minutes or so. And there are a xillion of them. Mammals, for comparison, procreate from a handfull of weeks to a few years. And their numbers are often between millions to billions. And the genetic algorithm works fundamentally differently. This inspired us to develop GGA. The other meta-heuristic I co-developed is dialectic search, based on Hegel’s philosophy of dialectic. It was created to make the development of search heuristics for a given problem fundamentally easier for newcomers, by strictly separating the concerns of diversification and intensification. With GGA and dialectic search we won 22 first places at international competitions, and both algorithms power InsideOpt Seeker. But I fear if I was to publish either one of those original papers today, they would be rejected.
