The #HorizonEU WISDOM project aims to improve the treatment and diagnosis of patients by developing novel AI-based tools to provide early diagnosis and predict the progression of chronic immune-mediated diseases. In order to access the volume of good-quality data needed to create such AI-based tools, fourteen partners consisting of academic, industry, and patient advocacy groups from all over Europe have formed the WISDOM consortium. Another participant in the Prague.bio Conference 2024 Pitch session is a joint project of Vysoká škola chemicko-technologická v Praze and Mim Neurosciences AB. This session provides a platform for leading innovators to showcase their technologies to a diverse audience of industry experts, investors, and researchers. The project is developing a new treatment for glaucoma. Neurodegenerative diseases are a large and increasing health and economic burden in the EU. Treatments that arrest neurodegeneration and that are neuron-specific are the Holy Grail of neurodegenerative disease research. Glaucoma is a progressive dysfunction and loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, leading to irreversible vision loss. There is no effective treatment for glaucoma, and we are developing one that targets a neuron-specific target. 🩺 Today we continue with the topic of applying AI to different areas of medicine. We recently wrote an article about the use of AI in the medical laboratory (you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gEtFdCjn). Today, we want to look at the application of this technology in diagnostics. ⛔ But first, we want to clarify – artificial intelligence is meant to assist doctors, not replace them. This is especially true when it comes to applying AI in the diagnostic process. What is medical diagnostics? 🤔 Medical diagnostics involves the assessment of medical conditions or diseases through the examination of symptoms, patient history, and test results. The primary goal of this process is to determine the root cause of a health problem and to provide an accurate diagnosis, which is essential for administering appropriate treatment. It's a complicated process, with doctors taking many factors into account and sometimes just relying on their own intuition. At this stage of artificial intelligence development, there is no way to automate the entire process. 👨‍⚕️ How can AI be used to support diagnostics? 🤖 What is possible, however, is the use of artificial intelligence to help humans make better decisions by providing them with more information, analysis, or ideas. So the goal is to improve the accuracy of diagnosing - and that is what tools for physicians should be designed to achieve. 👉 AI uses advanced algorithms to analyze medical images, such as X-rays and MRIs, to help doctors detect and diagnose diseases more accurately and quickly. 👉 It can also process a wide range of patient data, including images, body signals (such as heart and brain activity), vital signs (such as temperature and blood pressure), and personal information (such as age and medical history). This helps doctors make better decisions by making accurate predictions about health conditions. From theory to life-saving reality! A new medical AI achieved remarkable results in reducing mortality, setting a new standard for AI's role in healthcare. The potential of application of AI in healthcare is promising. However, the excitement about AI's potential is tempered by the balanced view of challenges ahead and by acknowledging AI's limitations in applied healthcare. While AI has great potential, the practical application is still in its early stages and must be approached with careful consideration and rigorous testing to ensure safety and efficacy. – We hope that our work will serve as a toolkit for every practitioner who works with limited data, help to democratize AI, and make AI applications feasible in domains where data or resources are limited, says Christos Matsoukas, WASP industrial PhD student at AstraZeneca and KTH. Today at 13:00, Christos Matsoukas, WASP industrial PhD student at AstraZeneca and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, is defending the doctoral thesis “Artificial Intelligence for Medical Image Analysis with Limited Data”. What are the main findings of your doctoral thesis? – We explore methods that improve the generalization and robustness of models when data availability is limited. We focus on architecture, initialization and learning showing how one can utilize Vision Transformers and self-supervision in the presence of limited data. We increase the effective dataset size a model has been exposed to, using transfer learning and complementary labels – a method the expends the labeling size during training. We show how the proposed methods can be used in the real world by streamlining the histopathology assessment of chronic kidney disease in a real pharmaceutical setting where we decrease the pathologists workload by 97%, while at the same time we reduce expert bias and mitigate translation issues when moving from preclinical to clinical studies.   In what way can your research be of importance to our society in the future? – Medical AI has the potential to drive significant societal and economic shifts.
