"Here at our company, we enjoy the buzzing environment in our office" These type of statements are now becoming more and more common as there is a focus on creating an employer brand. But software developers, whose work requires quiet and intensive focus, may find constant buzz more distracting than stimulating. In a company of some size you need a lot of different roles and different types of people. I see the need for a strong, unified company culture, but I also think it is critical to ensure that this culture accommodates the diverse needs of the workforce. And also keep in mind that you usually have an existing workforce which were hired prior to the employer branding initiative. I worked at a company where suddenly slogans like «We at….» and I did not feel like part of that «we» even if I was successful and popular in the organization. Also as was discussed in a previous post, maybe you want to grow globally and then you may have to have an employer brand that attracts people from different work cultures. May I suggest something along these lines: «At our company, everyone's perspective powers innovation.». It signals a type of culture and organization, but allows diversity. Interested to hear more opinions on this.

What I love about our hybrid work setup is the flexibility it offers, especially when the sun is out. But it also means I can stay home and recover from a cold on days like today 😬 At Bamboo Crowd we have a hybrid setup. Most of our clients are hybrid too. And an increasing number of the talent we speak to expect an element of in-office culture. Not all work setups work for everyone. But it seems that hybrid is gaining popularity. Which do you prefer: remote, hybrid, or in-office?

Sustainability in my professional life. Part 4: The Fellowship of Green Software (continuation from previous post) So, what happened after Hans-Jürgen and I had agreed to put Green Software on our agenda for the Backend Onsite? We used the Open Space format for our onsite, and I hosted the session on Green Software. I shared what I had learned so far (which honestly did not seem a lot), and then we started discussing and collecting ideas. I had not expected that so many developers would be interested in the topic, and again I was amazed by the amount of ideas that they brainstormed. And this time we did not get stuck afterwards. Green Software became a recurring topic in our future onsites, and also spread into the organization. Over the years, Hans-Jürgen had built a great network within the company, and he used it to get in touch with the Sustainability Management and look for other people who wanted to contribute to making the organization even more sustainable. In the meantime, my engagement as an external Scrum Master with the company has come to an end, but Hans-Jürgen and the developers are still working on Green Software and making good progress. For example, one of the developers has presented the concept of Green Software in a department townhall and they are exploring the Azure Emissions Dashboard to measure the footprint of their software. I am deeply grateful that I could be a part of this movement, and it makes me incredibly happy that it is still growing after I left the project. Thank you, guys! Without your energy and your drive to find solutions, we would not have come very far. I am honored to have walked this path with you, and curious what will come next. And I will always feel connected to you wonderful people, even though I’m not part of the team anymore. Three questions I ask in an interview and why they result in better matches 👇🏼 During the 20+ years I have been working within tech & product development, as leader and recruiting manager, I have practiced focusing on explaining the expectations and working conditions and asking questions based on those. My questions: ❓Based on these circumstances, how would you bring value? ❓ How do you behave when you have something to say/share? ❓ How do I catch your attention and engage you? These indicate to the candidate: ✅ This is how I listen to you ✅ This is how I know how you will participate in the team ✅ This is how I understand your needs Now you have communicated the values and culture of your environment without using words such as ”open”, ”value driven” and such.

𝗜𝗰𝗵𝗶-𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗶-𝗲 (Japanese: 一期一会, lit. "one time, one meeting") is a Japanese four-character idiom that describes a cultural concept of treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment. The term has been roughly translated as "𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺", and "𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦". I've been thinking a lot about this in the construct of learning. At this stage of my life, I am untethered in the things I learn. Whether it's bass guitar, martial arts, the art of being a recruiter, I find myself learning and applying, not with the intent of achieving excellence. I am learning to enjoy, "every moment", "every meeting". I may find myself at the same place often, like playing the same song over, or dealing with similar clients or individuals on various roles and projects, but here's what's beautiful. Like the Fibonacci sequence, learning and experience is concentric. Every time you get to the same situation or place, you find yourself, more learned, more experience, more aware. But you have to keep yourself open to learning, receiving, owning that growth is not linear and there are lessons from every person and every moment. This week, really be present in your 𝗜𝗰𝗵𝗶-𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗶-𝗲, and enjoy those moments in time.

Let's talk about Trust. Recently I just finished my skipper courses, and you know what - it's so much a software development. You're - a cross-functional team of 2-8 people - with a delivery idea of moving the vessel from point A to point B. But yet, that's an extreme sport - and as with every extreme team activity - Trust is key to success. A team member has the Trust if - believe other members are doing their best in their work - believe other member's estimations/promises are true - believe other members will raise a flag once trouble appears > We can fail, but fail quickly and learn. But how do you build that in the team? The first thing you do - you become such a person. You always do your best. You try to keep your word and promises. You fail and talk about that openly. You are - the Trust deliveryman. > As a leader, you need to trust your team first to be trusted. Guys, if you're finding it tough to use git cli, I recommend you use Lazygit (https://lnkd.in/dxXW_jek). It's a great TUI alternative to just plain git. It also helps us understand how git works even if you are a complete noob. Also, to understand git and the commands and tools it offers, there is this crazy game named [Oh My Git](https://ohmygit.org/), introduced to me by my friend Yash D. that basically helps us understand git from a time traveller's perspective, and it is Amazing! Try it out!

In my years as a software engineer, I’ve been part of projects that remind me a bit of Frankenstein’s monster. 🧟‍♂️ You start with an idea that sounds a little crazy. People give you strange looks, but you gather the parts you need, or sometimes dig 𝚜̶𝚘̶𝚖̶𝚎̶ ̶𝚐̶𝚛̶𝚊̶𝚟̶𝚎̶𝚜̶ deep into forgotten places, and after some serious effort, you bring it to life. You can scream “It’s alive, alive!!”, and it works! It’s functional, you’re proud of it, and it’s actually useful. You’re no longer the "mad scientist." 🧑‍🔬 But fast forward a few years… The stitches holding everything together start to strain, things creak under the surface, and suddenly, people are showing up at your door with torches and pitchforks! 🔥 There is some hidden teaching in this about Software Maintenance, Technical Debt, and Day 2 Operations .... but it seems the front door is about to break down from the crowd and those pitchforks look very sharp! 👨‍🌾 On a serious note, the first lines of the preface in the Google SRE Book say it best: "Software engineering has this in common with having children: the labor before the birth is painful and difficult, but the labor after the birth is where you actually spend most of your effort. Why Freelance Software Developers Don't Get Enough Well-Paying Clients This is by far the biggest cause of it. And it is: Treating Freelancing like employment. Most freelancers in Finland go do freelancing because they simply want to get paid more and have more flexibility over their work. What they don't understand is that with great power comes great responsibility. And in the world of freelancing great responsibility is you taking more burden off the shoulder of the person who is paying you money than you would if you were an employee. To make it easier for you to understand here is the difference between an Employee, a Business Owner and a Freelancer. Employee takes the burden by simply doing the job somebody else does not want to do or does not have time to do. Business Owner does everything for everyone so long as they have time. And Freelancer comes in the middle. He does not have as much responsibilities as the Business Owner, but also should not expect to just be paid well for the pretty eyes and simply doing what he is told to do like an Employee does. Freelancer comes to a Business Owner and says "Hey, Business Owner, here is the thing I've noticed about your business. It causes these issues to your business. I can fix it. Let's have a call". Then they have a call, during which a Freelancer sells the idea of a meeting. At the meeting the Freelancer (because he is not an Employee) takes charge and gets to know the Business Owner and his business better to offer him a solution. Then if that suits the Business Owner - they work together. This is called Leadership & Sales. As you can see the difference between an Employee and a Freelancer from the perspective of a Business Owner is simply that a Freelancer is more proactive and have more responsibilities for which he gets paid more and is trusted better than an employee. You can think of it as a pupil and a student. You can entrust a student with more tasks than a pupil as they are more capable. Same applies to an Employee and a Freelancer. A Business Owner can entrust a Freelancer with more than what they can entrust an Employee. So, if you are a Freelancer you can (and must) develop these Leadership, Sales (and Marketing) skills yourself in addition to your main skills (coding or otherwise). Or you can hire a person who can get you the clients so you just do the coding. In any case, you need someone who has done it already.
