Swedish Society for Industrial Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer

Om oss

Swedish Society for Industrial Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer (SweSIFH) is an organization that aims to increase the knowledge and network for people working in Sweden with fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Even though, most Swedish high-tech companies are international and part of a global organization, it is still beneficial to hold a forum for discussions on a national level. This forum comes to life by organizing annual seminars for industry and academia. During these seminars, presentations are held and accompanied by questions and discussions in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The presented work can be numerical, theoretical or experimental.

Let us present one more speaker. 📢 This time it´s Mats Kinell ´s turn. Mats Kinell obtained his PhD from Vienna University of Technology in 2004 and transitioned to a role as a cooling engineer at Siemens Energy. In 2010, Dr. Kinell shifted his focus to experimental work at Siemens Energy's fluid dynamics lab, where he has since published over 20 articles. His research has primarily centered on studying the impact of roughness induced by additive manufacturing (AM) on thermal performance. Over the years, he has supervised around 30 diploma thesis students in conducting his research. With recent advancements in the robustness and predictability of additive manufacturing, this production method has begun to find applications in heavy-duty industrial settings such as gas turbines and heat exchangers. One of the key advantages of AM lies in its significantly greater design freedom compared to conventional manufacturing methods. However, to fully leverage these new possibilities and account for the surface roughness inherent in AM, reliable predictions for pressure losses and heat transfer are essential. This is particularly crucial given the high cost associated with applying computational fluid dynamics to AM surfaces. At his talk at the SweSIFH seminar, Dr. Kinell will show experimental results for different AM geometries/materials and discuss the interaction between the rough surface and the flow. We are looking forward to hear more from Mats next week. Siemens Energy #swesifh #fluidmechanics #engineeringmemes #mechanics #engineeringlife #swesifh

Monday 😎 It´s time to present another speaker. 📢 This time we are happy to present Darius Gohari from Scania Group 🙌 This is a presentation about him. From Applied Mechanics to Engine Innovation: The Journey of Darius Gohari Education : In 2007, I earned my PhD in Applied Mechanics from Chalmers University of Technology. My thesis was about the LES and DNS of natural convection boundary layers on flat plates and cylinders. Professional Career at Siemens Energy: Joining Siemens Energy in the same year as my graduation, I immersed myself in the dynamic world of combustion and additive manufacturing. As a part of the team, I was developing advanced combustors for gas turbines, utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimize performance and efficiency. Additionally, I spearheaded efforts to develop CFD methods capable of accounting for the unique challenges posed by additively manufactured rough surfaces. My time at Siemens was characterized by innovation, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Transition to Scania CV AB: In 2019, I embarked on a new chapter in my career, joining Scania CV AB as a member of the engine development team. Focused on gas exchange-related topics, my work revolves around the development of diesel, natural gas, and hydrogen engines, pushing the boundaries of technology to create cleaner, more efficient powertrains for the future.   We are happy to hear from him on the seminar in May. #fluidmechanics #engineeringmemes #mechanics #engineeringlife #swesifh

It´s Monday 😊 and time to present another speaker 📢 We are happy to present Erik Spets and Marko Vikström Here are their presentations. ____ 👋 My name is Erik Spets. My background is in fluid mechanics and I work with interior and exterior, though mainly exterior, ballistics at BAE Systems Bofors. I’m excited for this opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives. 👋 My name is Marko Vikström and I have a background in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, hydrodynamics within various industries. Example of areas I have been involved with is marine propulsion systems, tidal turbines, wind turbines, paper machines, steam turbines and heat exchangers. Presently I’m working at BAE Systems Bofors AB with Interior Ballistics. I love diving into innovative projects and collaborating with others to make a positive impact. When I am not at work, you can find me exploring the nature, e.g. by hiking, running or fishing, or at the floorball court. I am looking forward to be part of this community and hopefully contributing with my experience. ____ Abstract Ballistics is a field encompassing several fields of study, foremost among them fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The subfield of interior ballistics revolves around propulsion systems such as firearms and rocket engines, while exterior ballistics deals with the aerodynamics of a diverse range of bodies. The presentation gives examples on various mechanisms within the combustion chamber and their effects on propellant combustion, gas expansion, and projectile acceleration. Through mathematical modeling and empirical analysis, the presentation gives an overview of factors such as chamber pressure, temperature distribution and efficiency of energy conversion, and their effects on the practical performance of the system. Additionally, this presentation discusses aerodynamic properties and their influences on ballistically flying objects, as well as trajectory calculations. #baesystems #speaker #forum #may #fluidmechanics BAE Systems
