Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund (AP6) sees sustainability as an enabler of value creation into the long-term return for the benefit of the pension system rather than a trade-off. AP6:s CEO Katarina Staaf participated in a panel of the Financial Times FT Global Boardroom discussing the ESG trade-off in the boardroom with Simon Mundy, Moral Money editor at Financial Times along with David Garfield, Miles Roberts and Peter van der Poel. A diverse panel of speakers representing corporate investors as well as industrial leaders from both Europe and the US. The panel focused on trade-offs and balances when integrating ESG into decision-making. Katarina described how AP6 prefers to talk about sustainable investments and how the pension fund has worked with integrating sustainability into the investment process for more than a decade. It is viewed as any other long-term trend which contains both risk and potential that needs to be evaluated. AP6 sees sustainability as an enabler of value creation into the long-term return for the benefit of the pension system rather than a trade-off. The panel was part of The Global Boardroom, the Financial Times’ digital conference, eighth edition in December 2024 to debate strategies for growth amid continued geopolitical, economic and technological disruption https://lnkd.in/eUzfj8MC #ESG #FinancialTimes #Moralmoney

HedgeNordic Special Report Private Markets 2024 “For pension capital, this is an ideal asset class. Value creation is the core competency of private equity managers, or at least, it should be” emphasizes Katarina Staaf CEO of Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund, which oversees SEK 75 billion in private equity investments through funds and co-investments. “Private equity is about developing companies and many in the industry are dedicated to improving businesses in various ways,” adds Staaf. “That’s the primary objective – value creation.”

“Why the integration of sustainability is crucial from an investment standpoint” A few weeks ago, Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund Head of Buyout Karl Eidem and Head of Sustainability Anna Follér the Private Equity International Responsible Investment Forum West, in a fireside chat on “Why the integration of sustainability is crucial from an investment standpoint”. Karl didn’t hesitate: 🥇 ”Integration of material ESG factors clearly adds value to the investment and ownership process and is the hallmark of great investment firms. It is a winning proposal.” Anna obviously couldn’t agree more. They discussed what great integration can look like, and also acknowledged that: 🧗♂️ ”In real life, obstacles to sustainability integration exist. They can stem from insecurity and lack of knowledge and understanding, but also from lack of clear direction, responsibilities and structures.” While obstacles are tiresome and hamper the value creation potential, Karl and Anna saw some clear solutions: 💡 ”Capacity building and mutual inclusion can powerfully mitigate resistance and foster a culture of trust and collaboration between professionals of various disciplines for the better outcome. Likewise, a clear rulebook and well-established investment procedures benefit everyone.” Concluding, they proposed that: 🤝 ”A true partnership between the investment team and the sustainability team is a winning concept when investing for the future.” #PEIRIFWest #Responsible investment #Integrating sustainability #SixthSwedishNationalPensionFund #AP6

Investing in PE is about selection "Being in this market means that you need to pick the best managers. You cannot replicate the market, and there is no index to invest in. You need to be really selective about your investments. We put the managers first, so to say. That’s an extremely important selection skill.” Katarina Staaf, CEO Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund

AP6’s sustainability highlights in 2023 When reflecting on the sustainability developments and achievements at AP6 last year, we conclude that achievements are the result of a long term, systematic integration of sustainability in our investment process (kudos to the AP6 team!), as well as an effect of the overall development in the industry (thanks to all peers and industry initiatives for great progress). Some of AP6’s sustainability highlights in 2023: - We developed a human rights assessment for indirect investments in private equity providing opportunities to increase understanding and dialogue around human rights in private equity investing - 59% of invested capital was managed by fund managers (GPs) that have set or committed to setting climate targets aligned with the Paris agreement - 75% of invested capital was managed by fund managers (GPs) that report ESG KPIs at portfolio company level - Female representation in fund managers’ (GP’s) investment teams and at partner level is increasing, but change is still moderate - Fund managers we have invested with continue to develop their responsible investment approach to protect and create value for investors and other stakeholders Curious to learn more?
