Suchismita Moharana and I had an opportunity to attend the COMEUP (컴업) Global Startup Festival in Seoul, South Korea. At the event, we visited the Scaleout Systems, a leader in distributed AI and federated learning (FL). Conversations with Ebba Kraemer and Fredrik Wrede were both enlightening and inspiring. We delved into key topics that are shaping the future of FL: • Challenges: They highlighted some significant hurdles in federated learning, the need for secure and efficient communication between nodes, and ensuring privacy-preserving protocols without compromising model performance. • Application Scenarios: It was fascinating to learn how FL is being applied in real-world contexts, such as healthcare and financial institutions, to collaboratively train AI models without sharing sensitive data while keeping proprietary information secure. • Future Prospects: Ebba Kraemer and Fredrik Wrede emphasized the growing need for privacy-enhancing technologies and robust edge-computing solutions. As data privacy regulations tighten and the volume of decentralized data increases, federated learning is set to play a critical role in the AI ecosystem. Our discussion also touched on the importance of bridging academia and industry to drive innovation in FL. As a graduate student, I found their perspective invaluable for understanding how theoretical research can translate into practical, scalable solutions. It’s inspiring to see how Scaleout Systems is leading the charge with their tools and platforms for privacy-preserving distributed AI. Fem innovativa företag har valts ut till Nato Diana (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic)-programmet i konkurrens med över 2600 sökande. ⟩ APR Technologies AB, ett företag som utvecklar ny teknik för att förbättra prestanda hos rymdfarkoster, elfordon, batteripaket och krävande elektronik. ⟩ Blixt Tech som utvecklar programmerbar kraft och levererar lösningar inom energihantering. ⟩ Dolprops som tar fram framdrivningslösningar för marina drönare genom att omvandla rotationsrörelse till fram- och återgående (flaggande) rörelse. ⟩ Kasi Technologies som arbetar med att utveckla NESS (New Electrified Supercharging System), ett system som går längre än konventionella hybridproduktlösningar. ⟩ Scaleout som utvecklar ett mjukvaruramverk som förbättrar applikationer och plattformar med federerade inlärningsmöjligheter. - "Att Sverige har med fem företag bland de utvalda, inom olika områden, är ett bevis på hur det svenska innovationssystemet står sig i konkurrensen när civila lösningar har stor betydelse för olika militära tillämpningar", konstaterar Robert Limmergård på SOFF. Att dessa företag valts ut är även en stor möjlighet för företagen, inte minst ger det tillgång till Natos nätverk av testcenter och acceleratorer i de olika allierade länderna. Dessutom har fler av de utländska utvalda företagen också starka kopplingar och samarbeten med svenska företag. Stort grattis till de företagen, till Sverige och till de allierade! Om Diana Diana - ”Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic” - är en organisation med uppdrag att skynda på att få innovation med dubbla användningsområden till försvarsnytta. Diana förser företagen, genom ett nätverk av acceleratorer, med resurser och nätverk. Diana startades 2023 och syftar till att sammanföra innovativa företag som utvecklar teknologier som kan lösa viktiga behov för alliansen.

Scaleout joins the NATO DIANA Challenge Programme The protection of data is emerging as one of the greatest challenges for modern AI. When data is generated at the edge—by vehicles, industrial robots, and drones—the challenge of keeping data secure is amplified. Centralizing data for machine learning increases the risk of data breaches and introduces bottlenecks due to network bandwidth limitations and reliability issues. Scaleout tackles this problem head-on by developing Edge ML software based on federated learning. Federated learning is a decentralized approach that updates ML models directly at the edge without transferring sensitive raw data. Only model updates are shared, drastically reducing bandwidth requirements and ensuring data security. We are honored to announce our participation in NATO DIANA’s Challenge Programme to contribute to the “Data & Information Security Challenge” with our federated learning solutions. In the FEDAIR project (Federated Aerial Intelligence for Recon), we will build a software-hardware prototype that demonstrates how a federated learning approach can enhance the security, scalability, and resilience of ISTAR systems by updating computer vision models across field command posts. From a broader perspective, I believe the key to achieving truly autonomous systems—and to defending against them—lies in engineering solutions that leverage real-time data directly at the network’s edge.
