Om oss

The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing the preconditions for building peace. LPI envisions a world where peace, justice and non-violent relations prevail through people’s active work and commitment. LPI has been active in making contributions towards achieving this goal since 1985. LPI works with a variety of local and regional partners in the Horn of Africa region, Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Great Lakes region, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • From 9 to 13 December, the Life & Peace Institute, in partnership with the Peace Bridge Association, successfully implemented a critical workshop aimed at promoting peace and coexistence amidst the ongoing war in Sudan. The war has caused significant divisions within Sudanese society, making such initiatives vital for peacebuilding efforts. The workshop, held in Nairobi, brought together 20 Sudanese civil society actors committed to fostering unity and collaboration. Participants were trained on the Resilience Toolkit to strengthen relationships, work collectively towards peacebuilding, and play active roles in repairing the social fabric. This initiative also highlighted the importance of advocating for peace and cultivating a shared vision for a more harmonious future in Sudan.

  • On December 2nd, the Life & Peace Institute, in collaboration with the Peace Bridge Association, hosted the Peace and Peaceful Coexistence Initiative in South Darfur State under the slogan: “Let’s work together for sustainable peace and peaceful coexistence.” The event brought together grassroots initiatives from South Darfur's Nyala, including youth groups, women’s organizations, and civil administrations. These groups had previously undergone training on resilience, peacebuilding, and coexistence as part of the Capabilities for Peace Project. The initiative underscores the importance of collective efforts in fostering sustainable peace and strengthening community bonds in South Darfur.

  • Empowering Communities, Building Justice. Last week, LPI's Horn of Africa Regional Program hosted a review workshop on "Localizing Transitional Justice: Community-Based Approaches to the African Union Transitional Justice Policy in the Horn of Africa." Our partner CSOs shared inspiring community-driven initiatives that align with the AU Transitional Justice Policy. By fostering dialogue between CSOs and policymakers, we're working towards a future where transitional justice is truly local. #TransitionalJustice
