Why does the job exist?
The Staff Auditor position is the entry level position with the Special Investigations Division (SID).
The primary purpose of the Staff Auditor position is to perform, as part of a team, and/or independently after sufficient training, investigations, and examinations into reports of governmental fraud, waste, or abuse.
The Staff Auditor will conduct objective, comprehensive, and increasingly complex, financial related examinations, investigations, and special audit engagements, under the guidance of a Senior Auditor and supervision of an Audit Supervisor, by utilizing investigative fact finding and other field work in accordance with the Special Investigations Division (SID) examination process.
The Staff Auditor maintains and works an assigned examination case load and reports directly to an SID Audit Supervisor or SID Director as identified and will report to the SID Audit Supervisor or SID Senior Auditor when assigned to do so by the SID Director as part of a specific audit or investigation.
How does it get done?
The Staff Auditor will learn to conduct investigative fact-finding, including procedures involving comprehensive review and analysis of government financial documents; learn to research and apply applicable laws, rules, policies, and professional standards; research relevant court cases, prior year audit reports, program evaluation reports and reviews and apply appropriately within investigative process.
The incumbent will learn how to interpret financial statements and apply relevant findings to examinations/investigations accordingly.
The Staff Auditor will also learn to conduct and document interviews of constituents, governmental entity representatives and employees, and other stake holders.
The Staff Auditor for the Special Investigations Division will engage with governmental entities, independent public accountants, oversight agencies, and law enforcement agencies in information gathering and investigative processes and follow up with agencies regarding audit findings.

Ideal Candidate

Audit experience.
Legal and/or white-collar/financial investigative experience.
The ability to multi-task and accomplish projects simultaneously.
The ability to successfully work in a team environment or independently.
Must be self motivated to learn and meet deadlines.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance and/or a related degree and at least twelve (12) semester hours of accounting or auditing (three (3) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to three (3) semester hours of accounting or auditing).
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of sitting, standing, bending and/or reaching may be required.
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Employees are periodically required to work at auditee's location for extended periods of time.
Working extended hours to include evenings and weekends may be required.
