More than 1.8 million people attended Hajj in 2023, approaching pre-pandemic levels. Saudi officials expect the figure to exceed two million in 2024. Saudi Arabia issues a set number of Hajj pilgrim visas annually, with quotas calculated based on Muslim-majority countries. This aims to control visitor numbers and ensure fair distribution for those wishing to visit Mecca. The data indicates that many of the countries with the highest number of non-domestic pilgrim visas issued are in Asia. Indonesia received the most visas (229,000), followed by Pakistan (179,210) and India (175,025). I always think of this retailer as having the potential to expand beyond core country x nationality in other countries if you know what I mean . Their entry to Egypt was a disappointment even though was at a genius time . First week they opened I put up a video on major points to amend ... (link in comments). On the same notion , others who entered Egypt and had not made it Panda and AlOthuim. Drama is though time is of the essence and local brands ( happy to) got it . Think Fathalah , beit elgomla, or high end Saoudi, Oscar, .. Entering markets needs the local culture know-how of shopper purchasing not just promos. Location and understanding traffic / neighborhoods structures are key too. Not only in designing merchandise and pricing but determining brand positioning and destination categories. Take LULU Sheraton branch, why would you go and buy stationary from there or fashion or appliances? What differentiates you ? Why would a shopper make the journey to go to you? According to Municipality of Jeddah, the city is the ‘economic […] capital’ (or at least a commercial powerhouse/hub/centre) of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In light of such claim, and Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia, why it seems that there are no established presence (through Jeddah-based offices) of leading (management) consulting firms (consultancy), such as the Big Three, namely, McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain & Company, and others with the likes of Accenture Middle East (Accenture) Booz Allen Hamilton, IBM, Kearney Middle East and Africa (Kearney), Infosys Consulting, Cognizant, Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger, SLB, Tata Consultancy Services, Strategy& Middle East (Strategy&), L.E.K. Consulting, Mercer (Mercer Advisors), Cisco, Gartner, and CGI Business Consulting (CGI). Jeddah (an integral part of the Saudi Vision) appears to be fertile ground for new business entities and startups. The presence of such esteemed firms may accelerate the realization of the goals of Vision2030 and enhance the overall business landscape of the city. The UAE was my home for over a decade, landing in Dubai at a very young age, I spent most of my time there. During my time in the UAE, I witnessed the rapid transformation of the country in every sector, from socio-economic to political and technological. Despite being there for such a long period, I never thought so 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 about the formation of the country and the leadership of its founding father, His Highness 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙠𝙝 𝙕𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙡 𝙉𝙖𝙝𝙮𝙖𝙣. Today, as part of my MBA program, Sheikh Zayed's leadership is taught as a case study, and this reminded me of my time in the UAE. Sheikh Zayed led arguably one of the greatest national transformations of the past 100 years, the textbook reads. When he was born, there was conflict among many Arab tribes, and the desert, now the UAE, was largely dependent on fishing and pearl diving, but now: ✔ Dubai, the city is one of the safest in the world, and its airport is the busiest in the world. ✔ The Dubai Mall is the largest shopping centre in the World ✔ Women hold leadership roles, including in businesses, government and military ✔Dubai has the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa ✔ The UAE is an example of religious openness where mosques for Muslims, Hindu temples and even Jewish synagogues are found in major cities. ✔ 15,000 years ago, the Arabian peninsula was covered in green forests. Sheikh Zayed committed himself to returning the greenness back to the region. As a result, over 1 million trees are growing in the UAE and many more. There are so many leadership lessons one can learn from his extraordinary life. SAUDI ARABIA: WOMEN FUTURES This week-end, I met with a great crowd of people - all highly educated and well-traveled. However, when it came to discussing about the Middle East, and Saudi Arabia in particular, I was once again surprised to see how little Western people know about the Middle East. Other than the typical stereotypes there was not much substance, and close to zero appetite for discovering a nation or a region in transformation. Maybe that’s because we are not (anymore) used to such fast paced socio-economical changes in Europe? My bet is that my generation will be slower in adopting the new, breathtaking luxury hospitality offerings that the region has already created, and most likely it will be the next generation, Millennials and GenZ, who will be first to hear and learn about the new destinations, most likely engaged by social media campaigns, and who will pave the way to a new mainstream tourism. Next generations in the West, as well as High Net Worth Individuals from the East, key Asian markets as well as from India, might be the leading travellers, and it will be interesting to see how the new Saudi destinations cater for these target audiences in their campaigns. I will never understand, why Western Europeans in particular can know so much about their past, but so little about the world’s biggest countries and cultures - including the Middle East but also China or India, for example. If you ask me, then that’s one of the biggest weaknesses we do have in a world that is increasingly competing on a global scale.
