Urgent Call for UVC Technology Implementation in Egyptian Hospitals Infection control in hospitals is crucial to prevent the spread of diseases, especially in environments where patients are at higher risk. To effectively eliminate viruses in the air and on surfaces, advanced healthcare systems worldwide have integrated UVC (ultraviolet C) technology into their infection control programs. UVC radiation is a scientifically proven method for deactivating viruses by destroying their DNA and RNA, stopping them from replicating and spreading How UVC Technology Works Airborne Viruses:UVC light is used in hospital air purification systems to disinfect the air. These systems, often installed in ventilation systems or as standalone units, neutralize airborne viruses by exposing them to UVC radiation, reducing the risk of airborne transmission.    Surface Viruses: UVC light is also used to disinfect surfaces, including medical equipment, beds, and high-touch areas. Portable UVC devices clean rooms after patient discharge, ensuring that all pathogens are eliminated before the room is reoccupied. Is This System Implemented in Egypt? While UVC technology has been successfully implemented in hospitals across the United States, Europe, and Asia, its use in Egypt is still limited. Although some private and specialized hospitals may use UVC systems, widespread adoption is lacking. This delay in implementation is concerning, given the clear benefits of UVC in reducing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), a significant issue in healthcare facilities globally. The Case for UVC in Egyptian Hospitals Egyptian hospitals should adopt UVC technology as part of a comprehensive infection control strategy. This technology complements existing measures like chemical disinfection and sterilization, providing an additional layer of protection against pathogens. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing threat of other infectious diseases, now is the time for Egypt to modernize its infection control protocols by incorporating UVC technology. Healthcare officials and decision-makers in Egypt must recognize the importance of this technology and take steps to ensure its availability and use in hospitals nationwide. This approach not only aligns with global best practices but also enhances patient safety and reduces the burden of HAIs on the healthcare system.
