We are excited to share that Motorica, Skoltech and Far Eastern Federal University have published an article in the prestigious journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. The article explores innovative neurostimulation techniques aimed at restoring natural somatic sensations and alleviating phantom pain in individuals with amputated limbs. According to statistics, around 80% of people who have undergone amputation suffer from phantom pain. The study examined two neurostimulation methods: Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) and Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS). Here are the key findings: 1️⃣ Innovative techniques: Both PNS and SCS effectively provide tactile and proprioceptive feedback.   2️⃣ Natural sensations: Participants reported that PNS induced sensations that were closer to natural ones compared to SCS.   3️⃣ Improved sensory recognition: Participants demonstrated an improved ability to differentiate between the size and stiffness of objects.   4️⃣ Clinical implications: The combination of these neurostimulation techniques not only reduces phantom pain but also holds the potential for creating multisensory prosthetics. The research, ongoing since 2021, has led to one of the key achievements: Motorica has developed a prototype of a serial model of a prosthesis with sensory feedback. The goal is to create and mass-produce new types of prostheses with sensory feedback.
