The most misunderstood DDD tactical pattern? Value objects. Value Objects represent a descriptive aspect of your domain. Unlike entities, they don't have a concept of identity. The two main qualities of Value Objects? - Immutability - Structural equality But this won't help you understand why value objects are useful. So, here's an example. Money can be a value object. Money consists of an amount and currency. A date range can also be a value object consisting of start and end dates. Is DDD waste of time? Disclaimer: I haven't read the article, im just stating my opinion: To properly understand DDD it's a crucial to understand the historic context and motivation of it's authors. You see, at that time, there were no free relational databases, at least not the advanced ones you can program. So building a system based on relational database at that time meant one thing: a hard coupling to a mega corporation and paying them money. Forever. By all accounts that's a very bad thing, and by all means many projects and companies got burned. So the primary goal was set to avoid such expensive coupling. And it was worthy goal at that time. But did it made software better? And, besides now have free alternatives. Secondly, DDD is object oriented modeling. So called domain models, at least in it's physical form are object models. That means computer memory. The goal of a program, at least the final goal is not to model memory, it's to fulfill the requirements. I guess, what they say it's true, when all you have a hammer everything else is a nail. Or memory object. Whatever. There are some good parts in DDD, don't get me wrong. Like so called ubiquitous language and bounded context. These are abstract concepts that, arguably, existed before. But DDD movement did a good job promoting their importance to a new level. But when they start talking about so called strategic patterns and tactical patterns, now we're getting into some crazy territory. I highly doubt that people talking about these things even understand what strategy or tactics even is. They just want to sell you a magical solution, I mean pattern that will magically solve all your problems.
