Think it's pretty cool that you can go look in Github for the C# language design meeting notes, e.g. from 2024-07-24 where discriminated unions was mentioned: https://lnkd.in/eC-WsBwB From that meeting note they cross reference to the issue that champions the idea, as well as the proposal write up from the working group. It enables collaboration, discussion, transparency and knowledge sharing. All things I love about open source.

Most apps I worked with had strict mode disabled, I am driving a big project at Celonis to migrate our codebase to strict mode, this talk was from learning migrating the big codebase. #angular #strictmode

ThreadLocal<T> 💡 ThreadLocal<T> is a class in .NET that provides thread-local storage, allowing you to create variables that are unique to each thread. This can be particularly useful in multi-threaded applications where maintaining state across threads is necessary. ✔ Advantages: Thread Safety: Each thread has its own instance of the variable, which eliminates the need for synchronization when accessing it. This is beneficial in multithreaded environments since race conditions are avoided. Performance: Accessing a thread-local variable is generally faster than using locks or other synchronization techniques, as there’s no contention over the variable. State Isolation: It allows for isolation of state between threads, making it easier to manage variables that should not be shared across threads. Scalability: Can help improve performance in applications with high concurrency since threads do not block each other. ❌ Disadvantages: Memory Usage: Each thread will have its own copy of the variable, which can lead to increased memory usage if many threads are created or if the state stored in ThreadLocal<T> is large. Lifetime Management: If threads outlive the data they use, it can lead to memory leaks if the ThreadLocal<T> is not cleaned up properly. Complexity: Overusing thread-local storage can make the code complex and harder to understand, especially when it’s not clear which data is thread-local. Debugging Difficulty: Issues can be harder to debug, especially if the state of the application depends on data that is isolated to specific threads. 🔦 Explanation: ThreadLocal Creation: We create a ThreadLocal<int> variable named _threadLocalValue. The value is initialized based on the thread's managed thread ID multiplied by 10. Multithreading: The Main method starts multiple threads (in this case, five). Each thread will have a unique instance of the _threadLocalValue. Value Access: Each thread prints its own thread ID and thread-local value, demonstrating that each thread has its own isolated copy of the _threadLocalValue, despite them all using the same variable. 🔎 Conclusion ThreadLocal<T> can be a powerful tool for managing thread-specific data, particularly in high-performance scenarios. However, care should be taken to manage memory and complexity, particularly in applications with a large number of threads or when using large data structures. Always ensure that its use is justified over more traditional approaches such as passing data into threads as parameters or using shared state with synchronization. Want to know more? One of THE most underrated time savers in huge .NET projects: Having a solution where you can easily resolve merge conflicts. When several developers at once change the solution structure: - add a new project - reorganize projects into folders .sln files with all those GUIDs become a giant mess and cause merge conflict. Lately, Visual Studio introduced a new, simpler ".slnx" file format, That removes all those complicated GUIDs from the solution file. It's available starting from Visual Studio 2022 17.10 as a preview feature. To use it: In Tools -> Options -> Preview Features enable the "Use Solution File Persistence Model" Then File -> Save YourSolution.sln As... And pick .slnx file format. Going forward, it will improve readability. And help avoid painful merge conflicts. Bye, bye, confusing GUIDs, you won't be missed. *** P.S. Lack of simplicity, not lack of time, is a true enemy in every C# project. ❌ Big classes. ❌ Poorly written business logic. ❌ Over-engineered software architecture. Everyone is on board with writing simple and clear code. The challenge is that "simple and clear" is both subjective and context-dependent. For instance, in .NET, most for-each loops can be replaced with a LINQ select method, reducing several lines of code down to a single line method call. Is the LINQ select simpler? Is it clearer? On the one hand, it's hard to argue that one line of code isn't simpler than a block. On the other hand, what if what you have to do in that inline select is less declarative than what gets spelled out in the for-each version? Many more developers are familiar with for-each loops than LINQ selects. Would they think the LINQ select is simpler? This especially comes up a lot when we're talking about good patterns and practices in object-oriented programming. Highly decoupled code or a rich domain model often seems "complicated" to developers who have never worked with it, especially compared to their god classes and stored procedures. But those same "complicated" patterns often make the code far easier to change with less risk, and they bring clarity to the business domain in ways that your "my class is a database table" models do not. So, your developers might find more tightly coupled code easier to understand, but more difficult to change. What I'm trying to say is, when you're harping about writing the simplest code possible or writing clearer code, just keep in mind that there is no objective definition for what makes code simple or clear.
