LittleWhiteMouse Dheannain Sugradh is the kind of untouchable bop you should no longer deprive yourself of. Favorite track: Dheannain Sùgradh.

Nickie Harte Kelly This is just the kind of thing I always hope I’ll find in my searches for great music. Alys Hoy, under the moniker Roehind, has created an incandescent sound, using her crystalline vocals and combining electronica with Celtic traditions. She also plays mandolele, and is joined by a supporting vocalist, and others on bodhrán, flute, mandolin, bouzouki, and guitars. This song was originally written by Bruno Coulais as part of the soundtrack for the acclaimed animation movie, Song of the Sea. Favorite track: Amhrán Na Farraige.

Sham3nRav3n So happy to have stumbled upon this wonderful music.
It has a very calming feel to most the album. And yet it can be very invigorating.
I listened to it shoveling snow, driving through beautiful serene settings, and preparing to go to bed. Works everywhere.
Coming from a Scotsman family, I'm glad my favorite ended up being a Scottish rowing song as well, bonus.

O ich ù is hiùraibh èile O ich ù is hiùraibh èile Hiùrabh o ‘s na hò rò èile Mo chruinneag dhonn, gura trom ad dhèidh mi! Càite a bheil i ann an Muile? Cruinneag bhòidheach as gile muineal, Ribhinn àlainn a’ bhroillich shoilleir, ‘S bu deacair dhòmhsa cur air a bonnaibh. Càite a bheil i ann an Albainn? Cruinneag cruinn donn as gile calpa, Slios mar fhaoilinn air aodann fairge, ‘S gur h-e do throm-ghaol a rinn mo mharbhadh. Nuair a thèid mi chun na fèille, Bidh mo shùil air a’ chruinneig ghlè-ghil, Is binne Gàidhlig ‘s as deise Beurla, ‘S bidh sàiltean àrd’ air a brògan eutrom. Tha do shùilean mar na smeuran, No mar dhearcagan donn an t-slèibhe, Dubh is donn ann am-measg a chèile, ‘S gu bheil ceann dubh air mo chruinneig ghlè-ghil.

Tiocfaidh an samhradh agus fásfaidh an féar. Tiocfaidh an duilliúr ghlas ar bharr na gcraobh. Tiocfaidh mo rún searc le bánú an lae, Agus buailfidh sí tiúin suas le cumhaidh i mo dhiaidh. Is óg's is óg a chuir mé dúil i ngreann. Dhéanfainn súgradh le mo rún ar faill. Níl baile cuain ar bith 'a ngluaisfinn ann Nach bhfaighinn maighdean óg deas a thrialladh liom. Splóid ar an fharraige ná is í atá mór. Is í atá a gabhail idir mé ‘s mo mhíle stór. D'fhag sí ar an bhaile seo mé a déanamh bróin Is gan aon súil lena feiceál arís níos mó. Scairt mé aréir ag an doras ann. Scairt mé arís ar mo rún go teann. 'Sé duirt a daidí liom, nach raibh sí ann. Ná gur ealaigh sí aréir leis an buachaill donn.

about

Queer autistic artist Roehind is out to subvert modern listeners' notions of what Celtic music can be. From an Old Irish word meaning "madness" or "frenzy," her debut album Buile (pronounced BWILL-uh) fuses elements of traditional folk, electronica, and worldbeat to create a unique and compelling sound that is both ethereal and embodied, ancient and immediate. Featuring songs sung in Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and French, Buile runs the gamut from sprightly traditional tunes, to dark and moody pagan-folk dirges, to danceable club beats you'd never guess were actually from an 18th-century rowing song.

The musical moniker of LA-based multidisciplinary artist Alys Hoy, Roehind taught herself music production from scratch during the COVID-19 lockdown after many years of being fascinated by Celtic music, culture, and languages. From writing her own arrangements of traditional songs, to recording and producing on a shoestring in her tiny home studio, to even drawing the cover artwork, she has meticulously handcrafted every element of her debut album to make Buile not only a singular artistic vision, but a true labor of love.
