Rat Paws is Eleanor, Henry, and Mira. Our friend D'Arcy recorded us playing these four songs live on the first Sunday of the year at the Woodland Theater in Phinney Ridge, Seattle, WA surrounded by thick concrete walls, with no sense of outside world. However it was freezing inside, as it was smack in the middle a cold snap. I, Eleanor, had laryngitis. Unable to speak, my vocal cords inflamed to a standstill, a whiteboard and a marker served my only means of verbal communication with the other players. So the vibes were lit. Lavender-vanilla tea was consumed with abandon. Did I mention it was fucking freezing? The space heater was our GOLDEN CALF. In spite of this sickness and idolatry we tracked all four songs in one shift using a 4-track. The vocals came later, in spurts, as did the mixing, as did all the ancillary stuff in between that we may twistedly refer to as "life."

The first available "single" is a song called "Blissfully." As a band, we had just barely gotten it into replicable "shape" in time for this session: a song written in autumn, the lyrics inspired by reflections on events of a Seattle autumn past.

If you've never experienced autumn in Seattle, I'll help you out since this will be my seventh go-around. it is wet green leaves; big wet green leaves the size of your face. It is empty Rainier cans on your curb pebbled with rain. It's also the call to go outside into the gauzy sheets of fine rain, to take a walk across an overpass spanning I-5, where no one hears you singing your songs over the droning of wheels on wet asphalt.

It's a lot of rain.

Mustang Girl Unknown is set to be released on October 14th. Cassettes will be available for pre-order soon.
