In the last two years, the Rhizolab has published a diverse collection of research. One of the studies involved the investigation of a new microbial consortium between rot fungi and rhizobacteria and its influence on plant growth promotion abilities 🍄🦠. This study was conducted by Bruno Carneiro, in partnership with Isabel Lopes and Cátia Venâncio, and focuses on the use of a group of fungi that had not been previously used in agriculture 🌽. 📢 For the first post of the 🅼🅰🆈 🅸🆂🆂🆄🅴 we present you the comprehensive review article signed by Joana Filipe Ribeiro and 𝗖𝗹á𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗮. It sheds light on the potential of #probiotics and #prebiotics as promising therapeutic interventions in the management of #food allergy. This article highlights the 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 in the management of #cow's milk allergy (CMA) and #peanut oral #immunotherapy (OI). Extensively 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮 supplemented with 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘙𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴 GG has also shown positive outcomes in: ✅ accelerating tolerance acquisition; ✅ alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms; ✅ preventing other allergic manifestations in CMA. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘙𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴 CGMCC 1.3724 in inducing sustained desensitization in peanut OI. However, the use of probiotics for the prevention of food allergy 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, while the use of #oligosaccharides from #breast milk in early infancy appears to be beneficial for preventing atopic #dermatitis, food allergy and #asthma. These findings provide important insights for further research and clinical applications, highlighting the potential of probiotics and prebiotics in preventing and managing food allergies. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal probiotic type, dosage, and duration of supplementation.

MUM is thrilled to participate, with the MIRRI - Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure Portuguese Node, in the launch of the "Lusophone Network of Biobanks and Biological Collections" which is a significant step toward promoting collaboration, capacity building and capacity development among Portuguese-speaking countries. With this initiative, the founders (Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mozambique and Portugal) expect to enlarge the network and gain international impact, visibility and recognition to consolidate the advancement of scientific research and innovation, on a global scale, in health sciences, biotechnology, food and agriculture. The extended drought has been affecting Brazil’s main coffee-growing regions and could have an impact on one of the most important stages of production: coffee flowering, which is crucial for defining the future crop. In addition to the lack of rainfall, high temperatures are also having an impact on the plants, which can suffer from heat stress. In recent years, Brazilian coffee growing has faced even greater challenges due to climate change. Phenomena such as La Niña and El Niño have aggravated the situation, making rainfall more irregular and raising temperatures higher than expected. During last winter, for example, temperatures above 30ºC for a prolonged period of time affected both the development of the crops and the process of drying the beans, especially in the production of washed coffee. World-renowned meteorological organizations warn that climate change will continue to impact global agriculture. Given this scenario, efficient practices, such as the adoption of irrigation methods, are essential to mitigate these impacts on coffee growing. https://lnkd.in/daeg8C3P

Our team member Joao L. Saraiva co-authored a review paper recently published in Reviews in Aquaculture. This study examines several crucial water quality parameters in aquaculture, including water temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, inorganic nitrogen, as well as emerging concerns like microplastics and crude oil. 💡By synthesizing the behavioral changes caused by these specific water quality parameters, this review provides valuable insights for future research, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good water quality for both fish welfare and aquaculture productivity. > We believe that solid scientific knowledge is fundamental to practically improving the welfare of fish and other farmed aquatic animals. This systematic review lists which nanomaterials, biorecognition materials, transduction methods, pesticides, and foods have recently been studied with biosensors associated with analytical performance. A systematic search was performed in the Scopus (n = 388), Web of Science (n = 790), and Science Direct (n = 181) databases over the period 2016–2021. After checking the eligibility criteria, 57 articles were considered in this study. The most common use of nanomaterials (NMs) in these selected studies is noble metals in isolation, such as gold and silver, with 8.47% and 6.68%, respectively, followed by carbon-based NMs, with 20.34%, and nanohybrids, with 47.45%, which combine two or more NMs, uniting unique properties of each material involved, especially the noble metals. Regarding the types of transducers, the most used were electrochemical, fluorescent, and colorimetric, representing 71.18%, 13.55%, and 8.47%, respectively. The sensitivity of the biosensor is directly connected to the choice of NM and transducer. All biosensors developed in the selected investigations had a limit of detection (LODs) lower than the Codex Alimentarius maximum residue limit and were efficient in detecting pesticides in food. The pesticides malathion, chlorpyrifos, and paraoxon have received the greatest attention for their effects on various food matrices, primarily fruits, vegetables, and their derivatives. Finally, we discuss studies that used biosensor detection systems devices and those that could detect multi-residues in the field as a low-cost and rapid technique, particularly in areas with limited resources.

🌾 Exciting progress in the WheatBiome project: second harvesting campaign completed 🚜 On the 11th and 12th of June 2024, teams from Universidade de Vigo,  Universidade do Porto and Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde (LAQV/REQUIMTE) carried out an extensive sampling campaign in wheat fields across the Zamora region (Spain). This initiative, a crucial part of WheatBiome's WP1, encompassed: 📊 Over 1,000 samples collected 🌱 3 fields with distinct agricultural practices: Conventional Irrigated, Conventional Non-irrigated, and Organic 🔬 Objectives:  🔸 Characterise soil physicochemical properties 🔸 Extract microbial DNA from soils and wheat plants 🔸 Evaluate wheat nutritional and protein profiles 🔸 Analyse wheat sample quality and safety The data generated from the analysis of soil physicochemical properties, soil and wheat microbiomes, wheat quality, nutritional and protein profile will be employed to construct a multivariate model, which will serve as a foundation for a decision support system to be developed in WP2, led by ART21. 💡‼️ This milestone marks a significant step in our mission to understand and enhance soil and wheat microbiomes for more sustainable agriculture. #WheatBiome #Agriculture #Sustainability #AgriculturalResearch

URL Abstract Points: Ingredients: The study focuses on donkey milk, pomegranate extract and UV filters combined in an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Efficacy Assessment: The anti-ageing efficacy was evaluated using imaging, biomechanical, and electrometric methods on 32 volunteers over 28 days. Results: Wrinkle count decreased by 32.9%. Wrinkle length reduced by 9.6%. Skin hydration increased by 11.4%. Skin firmness and elasticity increased by 9.6% and 16.1%, respectively. Enhanced skin color homogeneity was observed. Importance of Donkey Milk in Cosmetics: Hydration: Donkey milk is rich in proteins, including casein and whey proteins, which contribute to its high hydrating properties, making it beneficial for maintaining skin moisture. Nutrient-Rich: It contains essential nutrients such as lactic acid, lactate and calcium, which are known to have positive effects on aged skin. Historical Use: Historically, donkey milk has been used for its cosmetic benefits, famously associated with Cleopatra, highlighting its long-standing reputation in beauty care. Synergistic Effects: When combined with other ingredients like pomegranate extract, donkey milk enhances the overall efficacy of cosmetic formulations, addressing multiple signs of skin ageing, including wrinkles and uneven skin tone.
