Fascinating panel discussion in Lisbon dmg events - #LESummit on the future of #naturalgas. Some thoughts below: - In the past natural gas positioned as a #transition fuel. - This positioning under pressure as: a) growing global focus on methane emissions and the need to reduce these for greater impact in addressing overall #ghgemissions; b) COP28 highlighted the need to transition away from hydrocarbons. - That said, there remains a strategic rationale to use gas across several dimensions: a) #energysecurity: the need to secure reliable and affordable gas supplies. A salient theme in Asia (note Australia’s announcement to use gas post 2050) https://lnkd.in/eBgKyFrK; b) gas power generation coupled with CCUS to complement renewables and address intermittency until #BESS and renewables are scaled up; c) the need to decarbonise the grid in regions where coal is the dominant fuel source (e.g. Asia). - However, all gas companies will need to address and reduce emissions as their licence to operate. This week, Energy Ministers from the 27 EU Member States came together in Brussels for an informal meeting hosted by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The European Commission was represented by its Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič, who is in charge of coordinating the implementation of the #EUGreenDeal. The Energy Ministers discussed challenges relating to Europe's energy infrastructure, including: the need for a better coordinated and integrated European electricity grid; the financial and risk-reduction aspects of cross-border investments in electricity infrastructure; and how to ensure grid resilience during the transition to an energy system with a greater reliance on #renewables and #netzero greenhouse gas emissions. "We are very pleased to see that Energy Ministers are focusing their attention on the need to develop and improve Europe's energy infrastructure," says COGEN Europe's Managing Director Hans Korteweg. "In order to meet its energy and climate ambitions, the EU must take an integrated approach to energy systems, fostering energy efficiency and renewable energy across electricity, heat and gas grids." 👏 Together with around 100 companies and, 23 EU Energy Ministers, I was pleased to sign the #EUSolarCharter as a commitment to support European solar☀ manufacturers.   A special thanks to EU Commissioner Kadri Simson and Minister Tinne Van der Straeten for making this signing happen. The signing is an important moment of recognition. Governments, and the solar sector, have made a high-level promise to European solar manufacturers, acknowledging their critical role in the strategic supply chains⛓ of today and tomorrow.   While at the signing, I took the opportunity to continue to urge rapid action and concrete support measures at the national and EU level.   This means: 👨‍⚖️ Rolling out resilience criteria in public procurement & auctions as soon as possible 🔓 Unlocking subsidy support 💶 Establishing dedicated EU financing for solar – like the EU Solar Manufacturing Facility   The #EUSolarCharter is one chapter in Europe's solar story. Our Energy expert Hermano Pereira de Oliveira will be a speaker at the European Liquid Gas Congress (ELGC) on June 18-20th in Lyon. Hermano will present on Panel "Financing Energy Transition”, the session will address the key challenge of financing a just Energy Transition in rural EU regions lacking grid access. NORWEGIAN COMPANY RESERVES SPOT AT NEW HYDROGEN HUB AT PORTO DO AÇU [ Offshore Energy ] Porto do Açu, a subsidiary of economic group Prumo Logística, and Norwegian developer of green hydrogen and ammonia plants Fuella have signed the first area reservation contract for the newly licensed low-carbon hydrogen hub at the port complex in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives hub at Porto do Açu received a Preliminary License from the Rio de Janeiro Government in January 2024. The goal is to develop an integrated platform for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, connected to ammonia and methanol production units. The hydrogen produced at the hub can be exported or used as input for future low-carbon product industrial clusters to be established at Açu. Through this agreement, Fuella will secure a significant area within the hub that covers one million square meters in total. At the same time, this is Fuella’s first agreement in Brazil. Prumo, Fuella, and Porto do Açu also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the development green ammonia plant of up to 520 MW, based on water electrolysis. The planned facility will produce 400,000 tons of green ammonia per year, which could be shipped through the port’s liquids terminal, for export or domestic uses. The timeline for Fuella’s green ammonia plant project foresees a final investment decision within the next four years, and the first molecules delivered by 2030. COGEN Europe's members are ready to help meet Ukraine's energy needs (Press Release - 24 September 2024) On 19 September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol held a joint press conference in Brussels to address Ukraine's energy security for the upcoming winter. A day later, on 20 September in Kyiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a plan to provide up to €35 billion as an EU loan to Ukraine, to be directed towards Ukraine’s recovery.    Marking 1000 days since the launch of Russia's full-scale military aggression against #Ukraine, the press conference addressed the immediate energy needs of the Ukrainian population, while also working towards making Ukraine's energy system more resilient in the long term. Due to the continuing and intensified attacks carried out by the Russian military forces, half of Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been destroyed.   The EU has already mobilised resources to address the situation over the past years and months, sending equipment to affected regions in Ukraine. This includes a Lithuanian #cogeneration plant that is being dismantled and sent to Ukraine.    Over the coming months, the EU and IEA have announced that they will work together to ensure winter preparedness for Ukraine, focusing on: ✅ Efforts to restore gigawatts of power for the winter, covering 25% of Ukraine's needs ('Repair'); ✅ Synchronization of Ukraine's grid with the European grid, covering 12% of Ukraine's winter energy needs ('Connect'); ✅ Boosting decentralized production and sharing expertise in cyber awareness and security ('Stabilize'). Responding to these developments, COGEN Europe’s Managing Director, Hans Korteweg, says: “We welcome the EU’s announcement to support Ukraine on ensuring security of energy supply through the upcoming winter. In view of Russia’s continuing military aggression against Ukraine, damage to energy infrastructure risks leaving people without access to basic utilities, including heating and electricity. COGEN Europe and its members are committed to contributing their expertise and know-how, notably regarding the deployment of distributed cogeneration systems, which save energy and enhance resilience. We are willing to collaborate with the European Commission and with the competent Ukrainian authorities, in order to provide solutions both for the coming winter and also for rebuilding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in a way that strengthens resilience and energy independence, alongside sustainability.”

It's already 2 years since the European Commission published the #REPowerEU package, along with the first-of-its-kind #EUSolarStrategy as a response to Russia's devastating war on Ukraine.   I was happy to join yesterday's event marking the anniversary, together with EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and her team.   Solar has delivered for Europe in these times of crisis. More than 100 GW of solar power has been installed in Europe in the last 2 years, equivalent to powering around 30 million more homes. 🏘   No other energy technology is as versatile and scalable as solar. ☀ But we can and must go much further, faster.   We must now take action to support European solar manufacturers, flex our energy system, and ensure public support and community empowerment throughout the energy transition.   Together, we can drive even further to shield us from crises to come. Electricity grids form the foundation for clean energy transition and a well-functioning modern society. It is important that the regulatory framework supports cost-efficient anticipatory investments in electricity network as well as the development and utilization of flexibility. It is great to see that there are actions on EU level to resolve this challenge.
