🌟  One of the main pillars of iSTARS is education. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of sharing our knowledge with future doctors, engineers and data scientists during the AIMS Meeting at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa Our ERA Chair holder João Guimarães kicked off the session with some fundamental concepts in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, and the opportunities and challenges of using AI in medicine. The session concluded with a dynamic group exercise where participants brainstormed innovative ways to leverage AI in solving common challenges faced by healthcare practitioners in their day-to-day work. 👩‍⚕️🔬 It was inspiring to see the everyone’s enthusiasm for the potential applications of AI in medicine, always keeping patient experience and well-being at the forefront. #futureofhealthcare #aiinhealthcare #medicalai

Glad to have attended the Forbes Portugal Health Care Summit 2024 in Lisbon, where I had the opportunity to listen to leaders shaping the future of healthcare. Speakers like NUNO Prego Ramos (CEO, Valvian), Ricardo Baptista Leite, M.D. (CEO, Health AI), Francisco Goiana da Silva (Medical Doctor), Nuno Marques (National Coordinator, Active and Healthy Aging Action Plan), and Francisco Campilho (CEO, Victoria Seguros) shared their insights on the intersection of medicine, biotech, regulation, and AI. This summit again inspired me to begin writing a follow-up to my previous article. Below are some key thoughts and takeaways I’ve formulated, reflecting on the discussions and their relevance to current healthcare challenges: ↳ In a world where technology is revolutionizing healthcare, patient autonomy plays a pivotal role in preventive medicine. Empowering individuals to manage their health—by accessing their data, gaining insights on health metrics, and receiving personalized prescriptions via digital health apps—will not only benefit patients but also empower doctors in the preventive care phase. ↳ This integrative and multimodal approach will help identify early diagnoses and improve long-term treatment outcomes. And currently, leveraging data science and engineering solutions, powered by AI, is a key element in bringing together diverse health data to deliver truly personalized healthcare. ↳ Investing in preventive medicine can significantly ease the burden on healthcare systems. As highlighted in the report, The Value of Prevention for Economic Growth and the Sustainability of Healthcare, Social Care and Welfare Systems by The European House, every €1 invested in preventive care generates a €14 return in health and social care. ↳ The idea of handing clinical and biological data ownership to patients and healthcare professionals is essential for progress. However, political and ideological barriers continue to hinder this vision. It’s time for lighter, more agile regulations that can keep pace with innovation while ensuring safety standards. ↳ These regulations should also be paired with cooperation between insurance companies and healthspan planning, building platforms that incentivize citizens to live healthier lives. ↳ Quality metrics, rather than quantity metrics, must remain at the forefront. AI should enhance not just the speed of care but the depth and accuracy of clinical assessments. This means strengthening the doctor-patient relationship and promoting a more holistic and humane approach to each individual’s care. By combining preventive strategies, technology-driven care, and smart regulations, we can create a healthcare system that is not only more efficient but more human-centered. The theme of foreigners coming to Portugal #exclusively to #benefit the public healthcare service cannot be linked with the use of healthcare by the immigrant population. #healtheconomics Health Policy and Finance Challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Economic Perspective Congratulations #MEDICI ANDRE and #Maureen Lewis https://lnkd.in/daj_-vez Published online: 26 April 2019 Summary Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries have experienced a long-term process of improvement in populational health conditions, shifting their health priorities from child–mother care and transmissible diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, persistent socioeconomic inequalities create barriers to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). Despite a high level of governmental commitment to UHC, and rising coverage, approximately 25% of the population does not have access to healthcare, particularly in rural and outlying areas. Health system quality issues have been largely ignored, and inefficiency, from health financing to health delivery, is not on the policy agenda. The use of incentives to improve performance are rare in LAC health systems and there are political barriers to introduce reforms in payment systems in the public sector, though the private sector has opportunity to adapt change. Fragmentation in the financing of healthcare is a common theme in the region. Most systems retain social health insurance (SHI) schemes, mostly for the formal sector, and in some cases have more than one; and parallel National Health System (NHS)-type arrangements for the poor and those in the informal labor market. The cost and inefficiency in delivery and financing is considerable. Regional health economics literature stresses inadequate funding—despite the fact that the region has the highest inequality in access and spends the most on healthcare across the regions—and analyzes multiple aspects of health equity. The agenda needs to move from these debates to designing and leveraging delivery and payment systems that target performance and efficiency. The absence of research on payment arrangements and performance is a symptom of a health management culture based on processes rather than results. Indeed, health services in the region remain rooted in a culture of fee-for-service and supply-driven models, where expenditures are independent of outcomes. Health policy reforms in LAC need to address efficiency rather than equity, integrate healthcare delivery, and tackle provider payment reforms. The integration of medical records, adherence to protocols and clinical pathways, establishment of health networks built around primary healthcare, along with harmonized incentives and payment systems, offer a direction for reforms that allow adapting to existing circumstances and institutions. This offers the best path for sustainable UHC in the region.
