Are you familiar with the term ‘Femtech’? Should ‘Mentech’ be a term? First discussed back in 2016 when Ida Tin, the co-founder of the menstrual tracking app Clue used the term for the first time on a panel discussion devoted to female health at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference. An idea some consider contentious, there are opposing views on the term. Olivia Goldhill published an article for Quartz titled “‘FemTech’ is not and should not be a thing”. “Though the term ‘FemTech’ may have served the valiant role of protecting some men from talking about periods, taking a narrow group of products and labelling them ‘female’ has unfortunate consequences. This designation effectively implies that half the population is a sub-niche market with a series of body-specific needs. Where, after all, is the talk of ‘MenTech’? There isn’t any. All the ‘male technology,’ such as voice-recognition technology that recognises male voices better than female, or phones that are too big for women’s hands and don’t fit in pockets designed for women, aren’t designated ‘MenTech.’ They’re just the norm”. In my opinion, I agree with the term ‘Femtech’. I think both women and men need different solutions tailored to their specific needs when it comes to health, wellbeing and the integration of technology. For example, Flo Health Inc. is an app designed specifically for women. Here at Pitstop we have recently launched a business aimed specifically at improving the lives of men. Drinking a latte before the start of another teaching day at De Mindfulness Academie. While I am enjoying this moment of tranquility on this beautiful patio at our location in the middle of the city center of Amsterdam, I am struck by a feeling of ultimate happiness. It's the sense that I am doing what I love and what I believe is so valuable, especially in these times. On my way here, I listened to the news and heard how our world is suffering from a wide variety of disasters. Many of these issues stem from our inability to live together harmoniously on this earth that we share. A quote from Rumi came to my mind: "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." And although I wish everyone would stay free from wounds I know that life inevitably brings suffering, but it also offers us the opportunity to let light into our hearts. Mindfulness and self-compassion are powerful practices that help us navigate life’s challenges. Mindfulness allows us to stay present, embracing each moment with awareness and acceptance. Self-compassion encourages us to treat ourselves with kindness and care, especially in times of struggle. By integrating mindfulness and self-compassion into our lives, we create space for healing and growth. We learn to see our wounds not only as sources of despair but also as openings for light and transformation. In this process, we must also recognize our common humanity and stop dehumanizing others. By seeing each person as a fellow human being deserving of kindness and respect, we can build a more compassionate and connected world. Sometimes I get this feeling of helplessness because the problems seem too big. But it is also my practice plus my deep wish for change that helps me stay devoted to do what I can do for a more connected and compassionate world. And with me many more people are on the same path. That is a powerful thought! Lots of talk about receiving feedback but how about giving feedback? For an entrepreneur, what is the effect of giving feedback? At the Playground for Entrepreneurs, feedback can take many shapes. Advice, but also, questions, stories, and whatever feels good to share. It's very enriching for the person receiving the feedback, but also sharing, as past participants mentioned, gives such an energy boost! However, perceived OP for developing or inventing is attractive. Key finding: 1. OP for founding signals potential power imbalances and deters co-founders 2. But OP for developing ventures indicates commitment and appeals to co-founders 3. Co-founders with similar passion as the founder are more compelled to join The study highlights how founders should be self-aware of how their passion orientation can work for or against assembling their desired team. Useful insights for both founders and co-founders!

There is this place for highly attractive financial returns and also good, respectable impact, but if you want to tackle some of the more intractable problems in society or in the environment, you can't expect a market rate of return. There needs to be a spotlight on a lot of the most commercially attractive solutions, but also, I don't think we can just sweep all of the other problems and challenges that don't make tons of money under the rug. You all had clear requirements for the euvc awards to be succesful. Here's the top three: 1) Transparency: Key that the judging process was transparent, objective and respectful of fund and company data. We sought accommodate that by sharing ahead the criteria and when we announced the winners WHY they won. Hopefully you agree that these align well. 2) Data integrity: To do the awards, we had to request and treat tons of confidential data from Europe's best VCs. In doing so, we made sure to never transmit anything digitally between us, running the process in person at Isomer Capital's offices. 3) Credibility. This was closely connected to the expertise and integrity of the judges. We assembled a dream team of judges: Thomas Kristensen from LGT Capital Partners, Giulia Van Waeyenberge from Sofina, Stephen Lowery from HSBC Innovation Banking, Jonathan Sibilia from Molten Ventures and Joe Schorge and Chris Wade from Isomer Capital. Truly a collection of the most respected LPs in Europe - all LPs who have a decade long LP investing experience and whose expertise and integrity is undisputed. An interesting fact: the judges agreed in unanimity on all of the winners based on a ranking and discussion process, proving - at least to me - that the winners of this year are true rock stars ✨✨ Thank you to everyone who participated, supported and followed the awards. If you invest in a search fund, do you also have to participate in the acquisition? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲? Short answer: No, and you can get your money back! Long answer: Imagine an entrepreneur with 15 investors who each contribute $30k to support their search fund. The total budget of $450k covers all expenses, including salary, travel, and due diligence over the typical two-year search. Once the entrepreneur has identified a target company, his initial investors have the option but not an obligation to invest in the acquisition. Let’s say the company requires $15M in equity. Each investor, who holds one unit from fifteen during the search, has the right to invest up to $1M in the acquisition. As Jan Simon wisely states, this is a right, not an obligation. Investors can choose to contribute anywhere from $300k to the full $1M, based on their preference. If an investor decides not to participate, they can either reclaim their initial $30k with a 50% step-up (totaling $45k) or convert that amount into equity. The ability to get your money back is one of the reasons that make this asset class incredibly safe for investors. Although to be frank, the money we put in the search phase is the least of our worries. The risk is in the actually investment.
