Cut the Red Tape! As the co-founder of Silveira Tech Re_generation Village, my mission is clear: to regenerate 230 hectares of mountain forest and revitalize an abandoned village into a sustainable, tech-enabled one. But these goals are often obstructed—not by nature's challenges, but by the frustrating web of bureaucracy. For entrepreneurs and change-makers, the focus is on results. But bureaucrats are process-obsessed, often losing sight, or even being afraid, of the bigger picture. At Silveira, we're overseen by at least three entities just for our forest work. Their jurisdictions overlap, guidelines are unclear, and internal communication is lacking. We're left playing messenger between departments that should be aligned. Once, after dealing with an inspection by the Forestry Institute, I was told that my communication about a matter should have been had with a different department - and was additionally told that their departments don't communicate internally! Legislation designed to slow down extractive companies ironically hinders regenerative projects like ours. Innovative techniques that could expedite regeneration are prohibited by outdated laws. There's a disconnect—a lack of understanding from officials about our goals. To them, it's all about adhering to rigid processes, regardless of whether they make sense in our context. If we followed every regulation to the letter, our timelines would inflate by 10x—not kidding!!! Reforesting just a 1-hectare area can take over three months for approval, consuming significant time and money. Deviate slightly, and we risk work embargoes, as we've experienced. We didn't obey them though 😉 Consider the village we're building. Despite being designated a National Interest Project by the government, we're not automatically recognized as a Municipal Interest Project. This redundancy forces us into another costly and time-consuming bureaucratic process. And we can be denied the recognition despite having a governmental one 🤣 Environmental impact studies are essential, but the demands placed on us are ridiculous. We're required to conduct studies akin to those for an airport, even though we're regenerating vast areas of land. Multiple entities—at least five—must approve our project, each passing the buck to avoid making definitive decisions. This results in endless requests for unnecessary documents, further stalling progress. A significant portion of my time—20% to 40%—is swallowed by navigating bureaucracy, embargoes and court actions. This is time that could be better spent enhancing our project and amplifying its impact. Look at SpaceX and Elon Musk's experience. They faced similar bureaucratic hurdles, such as conducting exhaustive studies on how rockets might fall on whales or sharks. And were forced to torture a seal to see if it responded to the rockets' sonic blasts (the seal was okay, fortunately). Bureaucracy should facilitate progress, not hinder it!

🌱 WE ARE STARTING A SYNTROPIC AGROFOREST! After months of planning, we're finally ready to bring this new vision to life. We'll be transforming 1.2 hectares of land with over 3,260 plants. By adopting the principles of syntropic agroforestry, we aim to harmonize agriculture with natural regenerative processes, moving beyond traditional methods. In the end, we’ll cultivate a thriving, edible forest that will sustain us, support local wildlife, and boost biodiversity across the entire area.
