  • Sustainability v Performance. It's at the heart of our disruption. Typically performance goes hand-in-hand with convenience and sadly it's the environment that pays the price. Most of our sports skincare competitors are leaning into solutions for hands-off sunscreen application, right at the time when we really need to tackle plastic pollution head-on: big old plastic roller balls, plastic sponges, sprays... All glorious for user experience but hell on earth for the planet and the growing mountain of non-recyclable plastic that accumulates every day. We're challenging convenience because we believe that our protection shouldn't cost the earth. Lower impact skincare designed to support high performance for those who love the outdoors. Products for people and the planet. This comes with it's own challenges. Balancing our values while ensuring we deliver a positive user experience. Pushing to drive change and deliver plastic-alternative solutions, sticking to our values. For us it's give and take. We take a lot from nature, doing the sports we love.     I've been travelling a lot this past year, from the Arctic Circle to the Tropics and one essential I've been looking for to use during these trips is a natural suncare product that is skin, ocean and planet friendly. I'd not found anything that met the full criteria until I recently discovered Palm & Pine Skincare. I've since been introduced to Sarah Muir Palm & Pine's founder, who shared her company’s vision with me. The environmentally conscious Palm & Pine range aligns perfectly with natural suncare product requirements sought by the majority of outdoor, surf and water-sport enthusiasts, myself included.   • What problem do we solve? Preventing skin damage in sport. Athletes are prone to a variety of skin conditions, but those who train outdoors have the added hazard of solar exposure - geographical factors (altitude), physiological (sweat, immunity). According to the report by Gilaberte, Trullàs et al., a high level of physical activity was associated with a greater risk of melanoma relative to low physical activity - suggesting a strong and highly consistent association. Studies provide evidence that participating in outdoor sports increases the risk of photodamage and skin cancer. So what do we do? Sunscreen you say? This is where the problem lies. Sunscreen is rejected by sports players as a result of their use being unsuitable, uncomfortable or even hazardous under specific circumstances (e.g. stinging eyes or slippery fingers). So what's the solution? The study recommends, customize photoprotection to different sports to make it feasible and effective - "Sunscreens that are easy to spread, non-greasy, non-sticky, suitable for use on wet skin, non-irritating to the eyes, sweat resistant, and not causing loss of grip are more likely to be used consistently." Cue Palm & Pine. We felt it, lived it, and did something about it. Skincare solutions are just not designed for people like us, spending time outdoors, sweating, in extreme conditions. We set about to answer these pain points and we are now the sunscreen of choice for some of the world's greatest surfers, snowboarders, and cyclists. Problem. Solved. Our job will be done when every outdoor sports lover protects their skin with sunscreen, leaving them to perform at their best.   • Palm & Pine is growing. The team so far is a mostly-female, global network of contractors which has enabled the brand to launch in an agile and efficient way. Social media is the lifeblood of brand awareness for a DTC brand like ours so we knew when the time came to outsourcing it, we had to get it right. Introducing, Qetsiyah Jacobson With extensive experience working with consumer and skincare brands, and community manager to social tech platform HeyOrca, we are so proud to welcome her to the team.   • The superstar. Our SPF 50 is truly the superstar product of Palm & Pine. Uniquely vegan (no beeswax), we designed the product to answer the problems of sports lovers (stinging eyes, hard to apply, hard to remove), and came up with a formulation that is now loved by professionals and everyday athletes alike. The product is a multiple sellout with only positive feedback in the summer and winter market. With the insights from this we’re putting the final touches to our next release based on customer demand, an SPF 50 lip balm which we’re excited to be launching very soon. Product 3 to expand our skincare ritual for the everyday athlete. We’re currently raising investment to build out the product range further to cater to the outdoor sport lover, year-round, before during and after sport.
