What a day for EDP at Web Summit Lisbon 2024! 🌍 We started the day with an exclusive breakfast organized by EDP Ventures, Net Zero Insights, Future Energy Ventures and World Fund, for investors in climate technology. It was great to start the day with fresh ideas and relevant, interesting conversations. After that, we explored how ideas become impact in the masterclass “From Ideas to Impact: Leading the Energy Transition”. Led by André Machado Gonçalves, PMP, Mariana Costa and Angela Pineda Tejero, we delved into practical examples of how EDP accelerates the energy transition with speed, scale, and focus. As we confront unprecedented climate impacts, the urgency for action is evident. At COP28, countries committed to transitioning away from fossil fuels and tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. This commitment highlights the numerous advantages of the energy transition, including enhanced energy security, increased efficiency, and significant environmental and social benefits. Last year witnessed the fastest growth in renewable energy sources (RES), with over 60% capacity additions, primarily from wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, challenges remain daunting. At COP29 Azerbaijan, EDP plans to collaborate with partners, businesses, and NGOs to advance climate and energy agendas. This year, 97% of EDP's energy came from renewable sources, with an installed capacity of 86% (27 GW). EDP is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2040, and its progress in decarbonization is noteworthy. Rui Teixeira , EDP's executive board member and CFO, discussed these advancements, the phasing out fossil fuels in a world facing both environmental and geopolitical challenges and the future actions needed at COP29 during a conversation with Climate Group CEO Helen Clarkson on the Financial Times podcast, Sustainable Views. EDP's volunteering programme is a cornerstone of our company's relationship with various communities and our employees. Those who volunteer their time always end up growing and expanding the purpose and meaning of their role. In the first semester of 2024, the programme saw significant engagement around the world and, in just two months, during our Energy Campaign we had 917 participations from 542 EDP volunteers. In 2023, more than 4,000 EDP volunteers spent more than 27 hours on various initiatives, further highlighting the importance of volunteering within EDP. EDP has just announced its financial highlights for the first nine months of 2024. Our recurring net profit increased by 7% year-on-year, reaching €1,095 million. This growth was driven by strong performance from electricity distribution in Brazil and hydro resources in Iberia. Additionally, our recurring EBITDA rose by 1% year-over-year to €3,879 million, with our electricity networks seeing a 14% increase in EBITDA, now representing 33% of our EBITDA, thanks to significant growth in Brazil and Portugal. Our commitment to the energy transition is evident, as 96% of our €3,407 million total investment has gone towards renewable energy projects and electricity networks. As a result, renewable generation has grown by 18%, and 97% of our total electricity now comes from renewable sources, leading to a 73% reduction in CO2 emissions intensity (scopes 1 & 2). EDP’s Innovation Fund Project: A Milestone for Energy Storage in Portugal! The European Commission has selected EDP’s BigBATT project for its Innovation Fund—a cutting-edge 150 MW battery initiative at the Ribatejo power plant, Portugal. This project will enhance renewable integration, providing flexibility and stability to the grid by storing surplus renewable energy for peak demand. The only Portuguese and sole energy storage project chosen, BigBATT underscores our commitment to a low-carbon future and innovation in energy storage solutions. To protect the Earth we must come up with innovative solutions, and that is what we have been doing in the V2X world. By allowing vehicles to share energy with their surroundings, we are optimising energy use, making it more environmentally safe. Did you know that during times of higher demand in the electricity grid, electric vehicles can return the energy stored in their batteries to the grid? This is also known as V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid). The EV4EU and Drive2X projects, in which EDP New is a partner in both and EDP Labelec is an affiliated partner in the latter, are an example of that. Electric cars are more than transport, they are now energy sources!
