The Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Diaspora Council closed 2024 on a high note. Bringing together more than 200 people, the event dedicated to the theme “Soft Power and Global Economic and Trade Relations” featured reflections from Paulo Rangel, Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Mário Centeno, Governor of the Bank of Portugal, José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of the General Assembly of the Diaspora Council and António Calçada de Sá, President of the Board of the Portuguese Diaspora Council. João Rui Ferreira, Secretary of State for the Economy, Helena Malcata, Director General for Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Carlos Leiria Pinto, Advisor to the Vice President for Europe and Latin America at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) also took part in the discussion in a debate moderated by Joana Petiz, chief editor at sapo.pt, contributing various ideas in the debate “Value Partnerships - How the Public and Private Sectors Can Walk Together”. During the meeting, two innovative initiatives dedicated to research and science were also presented. Ron DePinho MD, Member of the Diaspora Council and Former President of the MD Anderson Cancer Center, presented the Portugal-USA Cancer Initiative, a Portuguese-American initiative that is a milestone in international scientific collaboration against cancer, and José Ivo, Member of the Board of the Diaspora Council and Honorary Consul of Portugal in Houston, the Us Friends of Portuguese Universities project, which aims to make it easier for US investors to attract US investment. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic, closed the Annual Meeting and welcomed the 86 new Councillors and the 16 Young Councillors of the Portuguese Diaspora.
