The #Christmas spirit has already arrived at #CEB! The magic of the festive season has taken over the Centre, filling the doors of our #laboratories with #colour, #originality, and #creativity. It’s true! Our #researchers are not only exceptional scientists dedicated to creating innovative solutions aimed at making a positive impact on society, but they’ve also proven to be true artists. With a good dose of imagination, they’ve transformed our #workplace into a vibrant space, beautifully #decorated for the most special time of the year!

Researchers from the Centre of Biological Engineering recognised by the Academia de Engenharia! Eugénio Campos Ferreira, researcher and former director of #CEB, currently Vice-Rector of the Universidade do Minho, and Madalena Alves, also a researcher and former director of CEB and current president of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), received the #insignia and #diplomas as new Academy of Engineering (AE) members during a ceremony held at the Pavilion of Knowledge in Lisbon. Founded in 1995, the AE currently has 154 active #members, including #Professors from the University of Minho, bringing together individuals with distinguished professional careers in #Engineering. Its main objectives include promoting #research, fostering international #cooperation, and advising governments on public #policies to address or mitigate socio-economic #challenges such as #poverty, #territorial disparities, #environmental threats, #energy scarcity, #drought, and #pandemic risks. A reunion marked by #unity and #solidarity! Under the Season spirit, the Centre of Biological Engineering organised its traditional #Christmas #Dinner, which took place yesterday at the panoramic restaurant of the Gualtar Campus at the Universidade do Minho. It was a night filled with joy, relaxed conversations, and acts of solidarity. Each participant made a symbolic #contribution, which will be donated to Associação de Paralisia Cerebral de Braga (APCB). Additionally, a collection of #goods was organised at the Christmas tree on the 2nd floor, supporting the Associação Bracarense Amigos dos Animais (ABRA). The CEB community also enthusiastically adorned the doors of each laboratory for the #festive season, with the best decoration, from the LIP - Industry and Processes Laboratory, being awarded a hamper from the purchasing Centre. Using #metal waste to produce iron-clay #catalysts, applied in Bio-Fenton reactions for the #oxidation of #pharmaceutical products in wastewater. This is the objective of the #BioPharmaFenton Project, financed by CEB's Intramural funding programme. #Functionalising these catalysts with immobilised glucose oxidase (GOx) is essential for the #sustainable, in-situ production of #hydrogen #peroxide (H2O2) used during the Fenton reaction. This method avoids reliance on non-renewable chemicals, providing a more environmentally friendly alternative for the generation of #hydroxyl radicals (OH•), responsible for the degradation of pharmaceutical #molecules. Looking for an #opportunity to develop new #strategies to mitigate #fire #blight in fruit plants? "Expand your #horizons!" This was the theme of this year edition of the #Biological #Engineering Days, organised by the #Student Association of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Universidade do Minho. With a focus on the essence of the course and current trends in the job market, the programme featured several #activities, ranging from engaging #lectures and #debates to dynamic #workshops and other initiatives. Over three days, the event provided all participants with a unique opportunity for #learning and knowledge #sharing, as well as enjoyable moments of socialising.
