🔍 Recently, I was searching for a new job and was attending numerous interviews for Senior Front-End Engineer positions. This had been my first time exploring job opportunities worldwide; previously, my experience had been limited to the Ukrainian market. 📊 For beginning a little bit of statistics: 📉 Conversion from application to HR call: 5-10% — Many of my applications were ignored or received an auto-response. ⏳ Duration of the hiring pipeline: from 2 weeks up to 5 months — a surprisingly lengthy process! 🤯 Number of interviews: between 3 and 7 — typically starting with an initial HR call, followed by an online or offline test assignment, several technical interviews, and one with a manager. 🥶 Worst time for candidates: winter is particularly challenging. 🛠️ Common Steps in the Hiring Process: 📞 Initial HR call. This usually involves a basic introduction to your background, technologies, and the products you've worked on. The HR checks your communication skills, values, and motivation. 🖥️ Technical screening. This might be conducted via an online platform like HackerRank or a short call with an outsourced interviewer. You typically face 1-3 tasks or verbal questions to evaluate your knowledge of JavaScript fundamentals, framework-specific tasks, or algorithms. 💻 Technical Interviews. This stage includes up to three sessions. Interviews are more challenging and dive deeper into your expertise. Usually cover JavaScript core concepts (arrays, objects, promises, DOM), framework-specific challenges (like building applications or components), and algorithms (arrays, stacks, queues, linked lists, graphs). Sometimes, you encounter tricky data transformation or iteration problems. 🙋‍♂️ Behavioral Interview. In this final stage, a manager or HR talks about your experience, strengths and weaknesses, conflict resolution, achievements, and the most challenging projects you’ve handled. 📩 After this extensive process, you receive either an offer or feedback via email or a personal call from HR. If you receive a rejection, ask when you can reapply. If you pass all stages, it's time for offer negotiation! 📢 In my next post, I’ll share tips and resources on how to prepare for each stage of the hiring process.

Hello! I'm now in my seventh week of actively seeking a new role, and I'd like to share some observations from my journey in the IT job market: Market Dynamics: Contrary to common beliefs, the IT market isn't as bleak as some suggest, nor as idyllic as it once was. The bubble has indeed burst, leading to a more refined market. Options may be fewer, but demand for highly skilled professionals remains strong. I find it particularly engaging when asked about my achievements in previous projects during interviews—it’s both challenging and exciting. Salary Transparency: Salaries are competitive and often transparent. Most job openings now provide a clear salary range, reflecting a maturation in the job market compared to years past. Recruiter Efficiency: The jokes about recruiters couldn’t be further from the truth! Most recruiters are knowledgeable and precise, with only rare technical misunderstandings—perfectly understandable. Technical Interviews: While they can be intense, they are not the nightmares they’re made out to be. Most interviewers are friendly and trusting, focusing on your actual skills and knowledge, though make no mistake - you will be tested and tried. Feedback Culture: More than half of my job applications receive a personalized response—excluding autoresponders. The further I get in the application process, the more detailed the feedback becomes. I am quite pleased with the level of detail provided as I progress deeper into the process. For those also navigating the IT job market, here are two tips: Diversify Your Search: Explore various job boards. I've found LinkedIn, Just Join IT, and No Fluff Jobs to be particularly helpful. I tried a few other boards but with little results. Smart CV Building: Focus not just on aesthetics but on substance. Clearly articulate what you truly excel at; your resume should serve as a blueprint of your expertise, setting the stage for your interviews. I’ll never forget placing a Senior Ruby Developer for 13.5k PLN/month (B2B) back then. Fast forward to today, and that figure feels like a distant memory.Figuring out what to pay engineers isn’t as easy as averaging job board numbers (I wish it were). If you’re grappling with this challenge, here are three proven strategies to help you find the sweet spot: 1️⃣ Leverage Your Recent Hires Use data from the last 6 months. - Focus on salaries from closed contracts - interview figures only tell half the story. - How often have candidates been willing to commit to your offers? - Numbers from signed agreements paint the most reliable picture. 2️⃣ Listen to Engineer Feedback - Track how candidates respond to your offers: Are your salaries getting a thumbs-up or silence? - Does raising your range increase applications? - How challenging is it to close candidates at the current rate? 3️⃣ Consult a Niche Recruitment Partner - They’re in touch with engineers daily and know what works now- not last quarter. - They track salary trends across clients and can pinpoint real-time benchmarks. - Best of all? Do you hire developers based on technical skills alone? It could be costing you.  Many companies make this mistake, believing that if a developer can code well, they’ll automatically thrive in the team. But this is not always the case. I have a client in Krakow who specifically hires Java Engineers who can have a “normal conversation" about software, clean code practices, and general life. But most importantly someone he can get along with. If they can do that, he’s usually ready to hire them. However, if they don’t fit culturally, it doesn’t matter if they’ve coded at Google, have an Oxbridge education, or have a long list of technical achievements. They won’t get the job. This is also not unique. According to Leaders.com, approximately 80% of employers take personality into account when making hiring decisions. Also research from Harvard Business Review found that 40-60% of hiring managers admit to hiring candidates who resemble them in terms of background, values, or attitudes. None of this mentions their skills. The ability to mesh with the team and collaborate is non-negotiable. Some people picture developers as introverted hackers, coding away in dark rooms, surrounded by empty energy drink cans. The stereotype that developers don’t need social skills in my opinion, comes from how they’re portrayed in Hollywood (Die Hard 4 was what came to mind when writing this). In reality, developers are part of cross-functional teams. They interact with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders daily. They need to explain complex ideas, collaborate on solutions, and contribute to the team’s overall culture. A developer who can’t work well with others or communicate effectively can disrupt workflows, no matter how technically gifted they are. It’s like having the most advanced software that no one knows how to use. What’s the point? The best hires are those who fit into your culture and can contribute to the team dynamic - not just those who can write the cleanest code. So if you’re only hiring based on technical skills, you might be missing out on your most valuable assets: collaboration, communication, and cultural fit. Skills get you in the door, but culture fit keeps you there. EPAM Frontend Interview Experience A recruiter reached out to me for a Senior Frontend Developer role at EPAM. I informed them about my 3-month notice period, and they agreed to proceed. The process included three rounds: two technical interviews and one combined managerial and HR round. Technical Round 1: This round was a mix of DSA and JavaScript challenges. The interviewer began by asking about my previous projects and my experience with React and UI libraries. I was then given two DSA problems: 1. Find the longest subarray with a sum of 0. 2. Find all subset sums in a given array. Since I had already prepared for these types of questions, I was able to solve both within 25 minutes, which impressed the interviewer. Next, he asked several theoretical questions about JavaScript and React, all of which I answered confidently. Result:Passed Technical Round 2: In this round, the interviewer presented a problem statement and shared a document outlining the specifications for an app I needed to build within 45 minutes. The task was to create an e-commerce app with functionalities like displaying products with pagination, adding items to a cart, and showing the final billing details. Given the limited time, I opted to use the Context API instead of Redux and managed to build the entire app in 50 minutes. The interviewer was impressed and asked about my previous projects and best coding practices. Result:Passed Managerial and HR Round: This round focused on situational questions such as: - How do you handle conflicts with teammates? - How do you collaborate with multiple teams? - How do you ensure your code is maintainable? We also discussed company culture and the package. Result:Got the offer! This was my second interview after restarting my job search, and it gave me a huge confidence boost. I resigned the next day and started preparing for other opportunities. Many of these questions are repeated from my interview kit itself.So it becomes easy for me to impress interviewers and crack companies. I prepared by revising material I had created from past experiences and have now updated it with insights from this interview.
