I had a fun time connecting with Konstantin Prodanovic and appreciate the feature among other great brands and agencies. In a large way, performance marketing services have become commoditized. Now, it seems like there are more marketing companies than there are people. In 2016, the edge I had was obvious. There were fewer who knew how to configure multiple ad and analytics platforms, and fewer performance marketers that understood how to craft content to sell luxury products. Back then, you didn’t even need to have great content because Meta was so good at showing the right product to the right person at the right time. While targeting has been largely impacted by automation as of 2021, performance marketing has gotten harder, not easier. Due to the iOS update, exclusions don’t work like they used to, and in particular, Meta’s ability to take credit for every sale continues to be too good to be true, making it harder to understand if additional spend is worth it, confusing the masses on what’s actually working and where they should be focusing their time. Brands need to decipher their analytics, not just lean into what appears to be doing best; the platform with the best reported performance is usually the least incremental. Any brand that is overly reliant on Meta or Tiktok for new customer acquisition is going to have a very hard time being profitable as they scale, no matter how good the creative is. If there's any advantage now, it's in Omnia1’s custom analytics that reveal how “wrong” the normal interpretation of platform data is, expertise in streamlining business models, and creative ideas developed outside the platforms that are amplified through them. Time flies. I thought it was just a few days ago, but two weeks passed. Still I want to say how inspiring it was to listen to many important, well-performing projects within Adform and partner companies—first-party data monetization, identity resolution, creative optimization, video inventory creation and monetization, national data alliances, and many more. Thanks, Adrian for inviting me, and thanks, Andrei for a fireside chat about Piano's perspective on data alliances around the world and, more specifically, the potential of the multi-publisher private marketplace in Romania (spoiler alert: it's going to be huge ;)) A few important takeaways: 1. Publishers have a lot of high-quality proprietary data (if they use the right tools to collect and draw conclusions from it) that is much more valuable than basic socio-demographic data. Thus, they can achieve campaign targets better if they can optimize audience composition for campaign needs instead of just trying to match the advertiser's defined audience with their own. 2. While it's difficult to determine the benefits of building a national data alliance, publishers have much more predictable revenue and more stable CPM in all countries where these alliances exist and work. 3. There are multiple business models for data alliances, each depending on many variables: the current direct vs. programmatic deals ratio, the goals of agencies with their portfolio of clients, etc. That's the benefit of the alliance on its own: It provides flexibility and transparency for all players of the ecosystem instead of relying on a black box without communication.
