A new game-changing weapon that uses radio waves to disable enemy electronics and take down multiple drones at once is under development for the UK’s armed forces. This forms part of work to put the UK’s defence industry on a war footing following the Prime Minister’s announcement last month of an increase to the defence budget to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. An example of a Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW), the versatile system can detect, track and engage a range of threats across land, air and sea. The system will be able to effect targets up to 1km away, with further development in extending the range ongoing. It beams radio waves to disrupt or damage the critical electronic components of enemy vehicles causing them to stop in their tracks or fall out of the sky. RFDEW technology can be mounted on a variety of military vehicles and uses a mobile power source to produce pulses of Radio Frequency energy in a beam that can rapidly fire sequenced shots at individual targets or be broadened to simultaneously engage all threats within that beam. At only 10p per shot fired, the RFDEW beam is a significant cost-effective alternative to traditional missile-based, air defence systems, capable of downing dangerous drone swarms with instant effect. The high level of automation also means the system itself can be operated by a single person. This technology can offer a solution to protection and defence of critical assets and bases. The advanced technology is being developed by a joint team from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), working with UK industry under Project Hersa. The House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence recently tabled its report on Canadian defence procurement, entitled “A Time for Change” (the UK’s defence committee produced a very similar report on their procurement system last year titled “It is broke - and it’s time to fix it,” which is both a perfect British title and a clear signal that we’re not alone in this).   Most #NDDN witnesses, including Christyn (Chris) Cianfarani, agreed that the Canadian government is seriously under-resourced in terms of people to carry out the procurement function. Most agreed that the government needs to develop some kind of defence industrial strategy. All agreed that defence procurement remains too risk averse, process laden, and complicated. But the system can and has managed to overcome this in emergency situations.   In the end, MPs delivered 36 recommendations. Among them was a call for the government to sign firm contracts with defence firms to produce materiel associated with the war in Ukraine and to re-equip the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes – something we’ve called for publicly and repeatedly. Another was that the government should produce a Defence Industrial Strategy to maintain and build Canada's DIB.   This work is important and should be shared not shelved. Prime Minister Keir Starmer launched the UK’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR) 2024–2025 on 16 July. Key issues covered in the review are to include an assessment of the UK’s domestic defence technological and industrial base. Defence Secretary John Healey will oversee the review, and the defence review team will be supported by a secretariat from the MoD. “The review will ensure that defence is central to the future security of Britain and to its economic growth and prosperity,” Healey confirmed to #CTO. “This new era requires a new type of review that moves at pace.” Launching this review was part of defence plans outlined by The Labour Party soon after it formed the government on 5 July. The plan includes an objective to strengthen the UK’s defence industry by aligning it with the country’s security and economic goals through support for domestic businesses, ensuring resilient supply chains, and promoting innovation. Due in the first half of 2025, the review will also identify and recommend changes to foster new investment and greater economic growth for the UK. The Barracuda M line is made up of three different weapons: the M-100, M-250, and M-500 cruise missiles. Sandboxx News has written at length about the M-500 which is meant to serve as a low-cost alternative, or supplement to, America’s very big and very pricey AGM-158 JASSM line of air-launched cruise missiles. While the M-500 is less capable than the JASSM cruise missiles it would fly alongside, the M-100 significantly outclasses the weapons it could feasibly replace. The M-100 was designed to be carried by rotorcraft like the AH-64 Apache gunship or the AH-1 Cobra, in very much the same way these platforms carry Hellfire missiles today. (Although it could feasibly be launched by any of the long list of other platforms that carry Hellfires.) Indeed, the M-100 is very close in size to the long-serving AGM-114 Hellfire, and even closer in size to the AGM-179 Joint Air to Ground Missile (JAGM) that’s meant to replace the Hellfire. The M-100 is about 70 inches long with a six-inch diameter and weighs roughly 110 pounds. In comparison, the AGM-114 is 64 inches long, with a seven-inch diameter and a total weight of around 104 to 108 pounds; and the new AGM-179, which is 70 inches long with a seven-inch diameter and an undisclosed total weight. https://lnkd.in/eHg7vZpP
