Conference “WUT for Ukraine – Insights from NAWA Projects” Wraps Up in Warsaw The final conference of the two-year project organized by Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with Warsaw University of Technology (Politechnika Warszawska) and ENHANCE alliance partners was held in Warsaw. The initiative was funded and supported by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) under the “Solidarity with Ukraine” program. From 2023 to 2024, 132 participants from our university took part in this project. Among the most active units were: 📌 Institute for Energy Saving and Energy Management, 📌 Institute of Aerospace Technologies 📌 Faculty of Biomedical Engineering 📌 Faculty of Linguistics 📌 Faculty of Management and Marketing 📌 Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automation and others. Representatives from these units had the honor of presenting KPI at the project’s final conference and sharing their experience of its implementation. The KPI delegation was led by First Vice-Rector Mykhailo Bezuglyi. Over the course of the project, 21 events were organized, including conferences, hackathons, summer and winter schools, and staff training sessions. These activities served not only as platforms for collaboration among students, researchers, and faculty members but also as catalysts for strengthening partnerships among ENHANCE universities. Key outcomes of the project: 📌 Promoting further internationalization of engineering specialties and preparing future professionals as both highly skilled experts and emotionally mature individuals; 📌 Developing foreign language competencies for future engineers, including innovative approaches to optimizing foreign language education at partner universities, while also promoting Ukrainian language and culture worldwide. The Rasht-Caspian Railway and the Cycle of ‘Combined Transport’ in the International North–South Transport Corridor Vali Kaleji- Valdai Discussion Club- July 8, 2024 The opening of the 37-km railway of the Rasht-Caspian project in the southern part of the Caspian Sea on June 20, 2024, is an important development in improving the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC). If Iran can build the 164 km Rasht-Astara railway route on the southern part of the Caspian Sea, as well as the 645 km railway from Shiraz to Port of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf and the 625 km rail route from Chabahar port (the “only ocean port” of Iran) on the Oman Sea to Zahedan, Iran’s long-term and strategic goal of connecting all important ports in the north and south of the country to the national rail network will be realized. In these circumstances, the cycle of “multimodal transportation” and “combined transport” (CT) in the North-South Corridor by land, sea and rail routes will also be completed in Iran, which can play a very important role in accelerating and increasing the volume of transit between India and the Arab countries of the southern part of the Persian Gulf with Iran, the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as the Russian Federation. Furthermore, completing the process of connecting Iran’s rail network to northern ports in the Caspian Sea and southern ports in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea can strengthen trade and transit relations between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEAU) and will have a positive effect on the development of trade between the members and partners of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dtB6G-wR

[ ENSREG Conference 2024 ] What a pleasure it was to work within the 2024 #ENSREGConference Steering Committee and meet such inspiring people along the way! Thank you to Autorité de sûreté nucléaire (ASN) for trusting me in this role 🙏 Hosted by some thirty speakers, the conference was attended by over 200 participants in Brussels. How can we respond to the growing interest in #nuclearenergy? This question was addressed under four main headings: adapting #regulation to this new context, managing #capacityandskills, addressing the challenge and impacts of #climatechange, and developing the role of regulators and #industry in authorising and developing #SMR & #AMR. The conference brought together a variety of #international players including the NEA, IAEA, WENRA, HERCA, ASN, STUK, SSM, ANVS, US NRC, NuclearEurope, EDF, Nuward, Newcleo. The programme and list of participants are available on the ENSREG website. Presentations and a replay of the conference will be posted there as well. Looking forward to the next one already 😀

This year I attended Defence24 Days - one of the most popular defence conferences in CEE region - for the first time.Two days, dozens of panel discussions, great speakers: Radosław Sikorski, Mark Brzezinski, Jacek Siewiera PhD, Wladyslaw T. Bartoszewski and many many others. It was impossible to attend all the panels that I wanted, yet the general conclusions of some are: ❗️Europe is not ready for war. EU is not fully united and each of the member states is protecting its own national interests; ❗️We can't take support of the United States of America for granted, the future elections might bring more challenges than solutions. ❗️Poland is one of a few countries that is preparing for possible escalation of war by spending and purchasing equipment and deterrence technologies. The absolute leader in readiness and resilience among all NATO counties is freshly accepted Finland. ❗️China is mostly seen as a threat to global order and security, and it's political position may determine the future of Europe itself. ❗️Ukraine is buying a precious time for Europeans, so they should keep supporting Ukraine and learning from Ukrainians. ❗️We need to put our economies to military rails, otherwise we do not stand a chance in an open conflict. NATO member states should keep paying the agreed 2% of their GDP for a collective defence. ❗️Society should be educating and preparing to the worst, the consciousness about the situation in the world is crucial. Besides of very good discussions, I like to attend such events to meet with (as I call them) "partners in crime" or people who work alongside of me in the field of defence and security: Ewelina Nimsz-Witosławska, Maciej Smoliński, Paweł Kułaga, Ewa Trawka, Lukasz Langowski, Piotr Betkowski, it was great to see you all 🤝 See you next year! #Defence24 #EUsecurity #deterrenceanddefence

#China🇨🇳 – #Kyrgyzstan🇰🇬 – #Uzbekistan🇺🇿 Railway Investment Agreement Signed A significant milestone was achieved in Bishkek as the Investment Agreement for the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway project was signed. On behalf of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, the agreement was signed by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Abasatar Syrgabayev. Representing the Joint Project Company, Mr. Zhong Shengui, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan Railway Company, also added his signature to the historic document. The construction of this transformative railway is set to begin on December 27, 2024. This project is expected to boost regional connectivity and strengthen economic ties between these countries. The river Sava near Sremska Mitrovica looks now like this, but ten years ago, it threatened to flood the surrounding areas and the days of flood defense followed. What connects our field of work with this event, apart from the proximity of the river, are the technologies which are used today for assessment and crisis management in case of floods, and which, although not (for now) for these purposes, we use in our daily business. Namely, the development of GIS and remote sensing technologies allow today to determine flood-prone regions and help crisis management in monitoring, organization of flood defense and analysis of flood areas and damage caused by floods.

The Chief Economist of the CAREC Institute, Dr. Hans Holzhacker, presented at the 21st Transport Sector Coordinating Committee Meeting in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on the CAREC Institute’s activities related to transport corridors in the CAREC region. He presented CAREC Institute’s research activities in the area of transport connectivity with a focus on the CAREC Corridors Performance, Measurement and Monitoring, Restoration and Development of Air Transport between China and Six Selected CAREC Countries, and intended new research on containerization, as well Institute’s capacity building activities on Road Asset Management and Road Safety. Dr. Holzhacker’s participation underscores the commitment of the #CARECInstitute to fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration among stakeholders in the transport sector. My take on Russia’s geopolitical and geoeconomic interests on the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) it explores Moscow’s interests, expectations, challenges and benefits in the INSTC. It also explains why Russia wants to control Syunik/Zangezur corridor and how Russia and Iran uses the Caspian route of the corridor for the arm transport. Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan reinforce joint measures on development of Middle Corridor Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Rovshan Rustamov met with Deputy Director General of Kyrgyz Railways National Company Dastan Usubakunov within the framework of the meeting of heads of railway administrations on the establishment of the International Association “Eurasian Transport Route” held in Baku on September 19-20. According to the information, the parties deliberated over matters of mutual interest, potential avenues for future railroad cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, and the development of the Middle Corridor. 📣 Cemeteries in Poland as Built Structures and Their Impact on Shaping the Social Environment 🎓Prof. UMK dr. hab. Marta Baranowska Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun 🎓dr Paweł Fiktus Wyższa Szkoła Prawa we Wrocławiu 📓 The research objective of this article is to analyse the legal aspects concerning the placement of cemeteries in urban space. It will aim to reconstruct legal definitions of cemeteries and to provide an answer to the research question concerning the Polish legal regulations on the impact of cemeteries on the shaping of the social environment. Analysis will be made of the location of other buildings within their boundaries, the impact of cemeteries on the use of property rights and economic activity in their vicinity as well as cemeteries as places of historical memory. The findings conclude that the Law on Cemeteries and Burial of the Dead is an outdated act subject to increasing criticism. 🇲🇩 Last week, Moldova's Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization led a key meeting on our Green Transition Roadmap, a key component of the Green Agenda project. High-level representatives from the State Chancellery, Bureau of European Integration, and relevant line ministries from Economic Development, Environment, Energy, Labour, Health and Infrastructure attended. KEY STAKEHOLDERS IN THE EU ALIGNMENT PROCESS Veronica Arpintin, State Secretary at the Ministerul Dezvoltării Economice și Digitalizării al Republicii Moldova said: “Meeting EU requirements and succeeding in our green reform needs cross-sector collaboration." Bernardas Padegimas, Head of SEI's Environmental Policy and Strategy Team, highlighted investment opportunities tied to Moldova’s green transition and EU aspirations. Lauri Tammiste, Director of SEI’s Tallinn Office, shared Estonia’s Climate Neutrality Roadmap success, showcasing the financial benefits of green reform. Justina Grigaraviciene, EU High-level Adviser on Green Transition at Moldova’s Ministry of Environment, noted that while the green transition offers significant benefits, it comes with challenges that can be overcome through public awareness and cooperation. Felicia B., State Secretary at the Labour and Social Protection Ministry, emphasized effective communication to attract foreign investment and local business support. Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, National Co-lead of the Green Agenda project, stated that achieving climate neutrality is more cost-effective than maintaining Moldova’s current economic model. Energy Ministry representatives stressed the need for support to meet EU standards. 🏗 One of the projects that will be presented by the Lviv city territorial community at the National Pavilion "UKRAINE AND ITS COMMUNITIES" is modernization of sewage treatment facilities in the city of Lviv https://lnkd.in/dFVCHK_h 👁‍🗨Sewage treatment facilities of Lviv receive 350,000 m3 of sewage per day. In the human equivalent, pollution is 2 million and consumes about 80 MW*hours of electricity per day. ✔The project envisages the modernization of sewage treatment facilities by installing new sandblasters, replacing blowers and repairing some of the outdated equipment and structures.
