    Sky secures deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in UK and Ireland. Sky's existing deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in the UK and Ireland has been extended until 2026. Under the terms of the new non-exclusive agreement, existing franchises and their new series will continue to be available to Sky customers on both Sky Atlantic's UK TV channel and Sky Group's pay-per-view movie service, Sky Cinema. The value of the new deal has not been disclosed. Sky customers will have access to hit series such as House of the Dragon', 'The Last of Us' and 'The White Lotus', the Harry Potter film series, as well as all new series launched on Sky Atlantic and the Sky On Demand service before the end of 2025. The best programs from Sky's channels and streaming service will be transferred to the Max service. From 2026 in the UK, HBO programs currently exclusive to Sky UK will be made available on other platforms and moved to the Max platform. Sky Cinema channels are currently available in the UK on Sky's satellite platforms, Virgin Media cable and are available on-demand on these platforms as well as on Now, EE TV and TalkTalk TV. The new deal also guarantees that the Max streaming service will be available to Sky customers from early 2026. The new partnership will give Sky customers access to an expanded content library of productions available on WBD's Max platform. In addition, subscribers to Now UK and Ireland Entertainment will have access to the Max version of the service, which includes advertising and a library of premium content. Sky is basing its future on a 'content aggregator' model, available in a very accessible way as the main app on Smart TVs, which currently have a 'discovery+' app. As Smart TV manufacturers know, they want to ensure that their customers have access to the apps of all the video streaming services on the market, so that they can choose freely and quickly. The new deal will give Sky a strong position in the UK and Irish markets. Sky's long-standing partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery is based on the wide distribution of integrated content available to its viewers. It should be mentioned that Sky has also recently secured the long-term renewal of rights to major sporting events until the end of this decade.     Apple signed deal with Major League Soccer. Apple and Major League Soccer (MLS) have signed a 10-year partnership agreement starting in 2023. It was a hugely important move for both parties. A new report two years on shows that the partnership is going very well. So far, it seems to be paying off, with sign-ups soaring and viewership growing rapidly. MLS and Apple have been very secretive in the past about the performance of the MLS Season Pass. In November 2023, Apple Senior Vice President of Services Eddy Cue told a conference that each of the biggest MLS games last season attracted more than a million viewers to the service, noting that "no one expected that". But let's take a look at the current situation. 'Sources briefed on the numbers' told 'The Athletic', that more than one million people watch MLS games on an average Saturday across all games and that about 94 percent of subscribers think the Season Pass is 'significantly' better than previous broadcasts, and that playoff viewership is up about 50 percent from 2023 to 2024. Paul Tenorio, writer for ‚The Athletic’, said that number may have been helped by Messi and Miami in the playoffs, as well as a huge boost around Miami's playoff opener, but the attendance was still up even when Miami's three playoff games were removed. There is no way to compare these figures with other streaming services. A million Saturday viewers a week sounds good, but is it? It's hard to say because we don't know much about the growth of these numbers and it's hard to compare the MLS Season Pass to other streaming services. What does look positive is the 50 per cent increase in playoff views, with the latest MLS comment saying that subscriber numbers were ‚better than expected’. The league strategically consolidated all of its media rights about three years before the rights window opened to create a 'one big package' to offer to potential domestic partners. Apple is heavily involved in the project. They have built a large team to focus on the Season Pass and are in regular contact with MLS executives. According to sources, Apple executive Eddy Cue recently sat in on a meeting of the league's Sports and Competition Committee to discuss with owners what Apple is doing to help the league expand and move forward, as well as to review what MLS wants to do in this area in the coming years. It's good that streaming platforms are getting more and more interested in sports. It will take some time to change the habits of the fans and bring them to the streaming market instead of the traditional cable TV they have been used to for years.     Sky and Amazon extend collaboration agreement. Media giant Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) has announced an extension to its long-term relationship with Amazon. This means that 'Prime Video' apps and related content will continue to be available on Sky devices (e.g. Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream etc.). The agreement was first signed in 2020. Sky has agreed to offer the Amazon Prime Video streaming service to millions of customers across Europe. This partnership has allowed both streaming platforms to extend their reach in some of their key markets, giving Amazon customers the opportunity to watch original productions and content previously only available on Sky. The new deal builds on the existing partnership to ensure that Sky customers will continue to have access to Prime Video’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League football, as well as hit shows including Clarkson's Farm, LOL: Last One Laughing, The Boys and many more. Prime Video content will remain alongside award-winning Sky Originals such as 'Rob & Romesh Vs' and 'League of their Own', as well as Sky's unrivaled live sports and news content and popular programming from partners including Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+, BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Nick Herm, Chief Business Officer, said in a recent statement that they want to provide users with a platform that brings all their favorite apps and channels together in one place. He highlighted that the renewed partnership with Prime Video will allow Sky users to enjoy award-winning content across all available devices. Barry Furlong, VP Prime Video Europe, noted that users of both platforms appreciate having access to the wide range of their favorite TV series, movies or live sports available on both platforms. The extension agreement applies to Sky’s outlets in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The main objective of the collaboration between the two platforms has been to integrate their services to improve the viewing experience for customers across Europe.     Streaming will be added to national TV ratings. The Media Rating Council (MRC), an oversight group that applies standards to audience measurement models from companies such as Nielsen, Comscore and VideoAmp, has approved a plan for Nielsen to integrate first-party streaming data into the company's panel-based national TV ratings. The "panel plus big data" measurement has the potential - at least for live events - to show that a significantly higher number of people are watching a particular program than the panel-only measurement. The sample size for panel plus big data is currently small. Amazon is the only Nielsen client currently using integrated measurement, for its Prime Video Thursday Night Football telecasts. In his a statement Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao highlighted the importance of the MRC's approval, which confirms Nielsen's ability to introduce this innovation in a safe and verified manner. With proven methodologies such as our panel of accredited individuals and precise new research solutions for the streaming measurement era, Nielsen will ensure accurate measurement of the content viewers are watching. Our industry will finally have a true picture of linear and streaming audiences. Data there has shown a significant increase with the addition of Amazon's streaming data, about an 8 per cent increase (just under 1 million viewers) from the panel-only measure. Nielsen's panel-only figures have 'Thursday Night Football' averaging 13.2 million viewers per game this season. The Big Data addition pushes the audience to 14.26 million. This increases the number of titles with limited multi-platform data from other networks that occasionally report combined TV and streaming numbers for live events. NBC's Sunday Night Football has averaged about 18.9 million TV viewers this season (streaming on the Peacock and other digital platforms, as measured by Adobe Analytics). Those games have grown to 21.3 million, an increase of about 13 percent. Other Nielsen clients such as Fox, ESPN and CBS have also seen streaming gains for live sports, although not as regularly (CBS is also currently in a contract dispute with Nielsen and does not use its ratings product). Nielsen is currently in talks with a number of other clients to use the panel plus big data measurement for live events. What it won't do, however, is show additional same-day viewing for most regular programming or episodes of popular TV series. The new tool could help networks and streamers reach an even wider audience. Live broadcasts are among the most reliable viewers on television. Let me know what you think in the comments.     The 52nd International Emmy Awards Gala organized by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International Emmy Awards), of which I have the great honor of being a member, is now behind us. This year, 56 productions from 21 countries were nominated. At Monday's Gala, the main awards were presented to TV creators and performers from 10 countries in 14 categories. The 14 winning International Emmy programs and performances are: ‚Pianoforte’ (Arts Programming), Timothy Spall (Best Performance by an Actor), Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying (Best Performance by an Actress), ‚División Palermo’ (Comedy), ‚Otto Baxter: Not a F***ing Horror Story’ (Documentary), ‚Les Gouttes de Dieu’ [Drops of God] (Drama Series), ‚Tabby McTat’ (Kids: Animation), ‚La Vida Secreta de tu Mente’ [The secret life of your mind] (Kids: Factual & Entertainment), ‚En af Drengene’ [One of the Boys] (Kids: Live Action), ‚Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story’ (Sports Documentary), ‚Restaurant Misverstand’ – Season 2 [The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes] (Non-Scripted Entertainment), ‚Punt de no Retorn’ [Point of no Return] (Short-Form Series), La Promesa [The Vow] (Telenovela) and Liebes Kind [Dear Child] (TV Movie/Mini-Series). The main International Emmy Award in the Arts Programming category for the Polish documentary 'Pianoforte', directed by Jakub Piątek, is a huge success for Polish documentary. This is only the second, but certainly not the last Emmy statuette for Poland. The first statuette in 2007 went to the children's and youth series "Magiczne drzewo" [The Magic Tree], directed by Andrzej Maleszka. The International Emmy Award-winning 'Pianoforte' is a documentary about the participants of the legendary the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition held every year in Warsaw. Young people from all over the world compete with great virtuosity to win the most prestigious piano competition in the world. Once again, my congratulations to all of the Winners and Nominees.
