I still remember the day I landed my first client on Upwork. The client needed an experienced content writer to help write website content for a soon-to-be-launched website. For me, it was a beautiful win, even though it was far less than $100. It was $25. 😤 Even with that amount, here's what I learned👇🏽 1) I learned the importance of having relevant social proof, related to what the client wants. The client wanted a biography-like content And I had a biography content on my blog website ranking on the first page of Google. (So I shared the targeted keywords and link) 2) Have good communication skills (both in writing and orally) I had a few Zoom calls with the beautiful white lady a couple of times (I felt like a Superman back then 😃) 3) Every project will push, stretch, and teach you more than expected. Why Your Copy Flops and Why You Should Get a Grip On Your Greed. Many times Copywriters ask why their copy do not convert as it should after doing all they think they should have done. "I did extensive and deep research" "I got all their pain-points" "I have a catchy subject line" "My copy was assembled strategically" "What did I do wrong?" Sometimes I go through the copy and truly, it should have converted. And yes, I completely agree with you. Now, I'll share a tiny but effective secret that I learned from copy legend Gary Halbert. NEVER WRITE COPY FOR A PRODUCT YOU DON'T LOVE. Let's dial down a bit... I know you're thinking "Does it even make sense?" Yeah.. I thought so too, until it happened to me. Now, what do I mean? You can write for any product of your choice, but... Look at it this way... If you really like a product, you get it, use it and experience the results of using it. Now I ask you, Who is the best person to convince others to use the same product? Ofcourse you. Why is that? There's a feeling of conviction that will ooze in the way you speak about it. And that's a major factor that determines whether people buy a product or not. Why? People will buy a product when they know that someone with their problem have used it and have gotten tremendous result from it. It's the same thing when you write. What I'm saying here is... Before you write copy for a business, Find a way to experience what it feels like making use of the product. Else, its going to ooze in the copy you write. Have you read a copy from the legends? Many times, I feel like they know the product even more than the producer. Now, before you onboard your next client, be sure to want to have an experience of their product. Because, sometimes... Just research doesn't cut it. Personal experience does.

“Experience required” is the biggest lie in freelancing. Most clients don’t care how long you’ve been working. They care what you can do now. When I started on Upwork, I was fresh. Like, “What is SEO?” fresh. And yet, I tripled my rate in my first three months. Want to know how? I delivered quality. My history didn’t matter at all. So stop all the “10 years of experience.” It tells clients nothing about the value you bring. Here’s the conclusion from a study quoted in “Talent Is Overrated” by Geoff Colvin: “People with lots of experience were no better at their jobs than those with very little experience.” Some folks clock decades in the game and still can’t crack it. Meanwhile, rookies are killing it because they’re hungry and clever. So, how do you stand out without the so-called venerable experience? Here’s the playbook: - Highlight results, not years. Showcase successful projects, not timelines. - Be specific. Details sell your capability better than duration. Next, tell a story. Everyone loves a good story. Make it about how you solved a problem or nailed a project. Clients eat that up. They want someone who’s enthusiastic, dedicated, and sharp. Not just someone who’s been around since dial-up. Your recognition swells → Suddenly, you're ranking on Google keywords... (My UpWork profile ranks on Google for a pretty solid SEO keyword). Now… That seems like an "Upwork heaven"... A "Best case Scenario". But let's look beyond this rosy image: Securing your first gig = a battlefield. Bidding gets pricey → Connects don't come cheap... Fierce competition → You're lost in a sea of freelancers. The road to spec gig is ridden with bumps... UNLESS... You redefine the game → Your focus. Your strategy. You invest - time, quality, and yes, even those precious connects. You stand out → Not just another freelancer in the vast ocean. Only then... The clients pour in → The recognition soars. The most common and most difficult question asked by Upwork clients and others in general is, "How do you know when your writing is successful?" Now writers claiming... - I make your brand 10X your sales. - My copy will get your leads that convert. - I will write ads that will stand out from the competition. - With my LinkedIn ghostwriting for founders you will be a thought leader. But no one tells you the measurement tools. Yes, engagement has analytics but what about the rest? The perfect answer for all the rest and the questions will be... By tracking key metrics that align with your business goals. This includes disclosing data on your behalf and sharing results. This includes monitoring increases in sales, lead generation, and customer engagement after the copy is implemented. Data like -Conversion rates -Click-through rates On your website or emails, and social media interactions. Reading the data and these metrics gives solid feedback on the work. If we observe positive trends in these areas, it indicates that the copy is resonating well with your target market and achieving the desired results. Happy Client Hunting!!!
