The Educational Department of Pirelli HangarBicocca presents Edu Summer 2024 from 10 to 30 June: a program of events for children and young people aged between 6 and 11, with summer camps during the week and a series of free workshops for families and special activities open to all on weekends.

Edu Summer 2024 takes place in the indoor and outdoor spaces of Pirelli HangarBicocca, inspired by the temporary exhibitions "Call and Gather. Sisters. Moths and Flame Twisters. Lioness Bones, Snakes and Stones." by Chiara Camoni and "Ground Break" by Nari Ward, currently set up in the museum's Shed and Navate.

On the weekends of June 15-16 and June 22-23, workshops for families will involve and be led by Anna Roberti, botanist, who, inspired by the natural world among Chiara Camoni's works, will create watercolors and colored chalks from plant elements and different types of clays, and Justin Randolph Thompson, artist, who will investigate the sound and collaborative dimensions from his own performances created for Nari Ward's "Ground Break".

Parallel to the workshops, Roberti and Thompson have imagined special activities open to all that will be possible to experience throughout the day and that do not require reservations.

The summer camps titled "Terracotta Armies" are created in collaboration with artist Chiara Camoni and the collective Centro di Sperimentazione who will accompany children to discover the secrets of the world of clay and nature. As in a great collective work, the characters made during the three weeks will come together in Pirelli HangarBicocca to compose a new and unprecedented terracotta army.

Designed and led by Anna Roberti, botanist
Inspired by the plant world that animates Camoni's exhibition, we will let water and ash help us extract colors from plants as we go to the green areas around Pirelli HangarBicocca to collect leaves from local vegetation. On the way back, we will paint the leaves with plant dyes and use them as stamps to directly print silhouettes on a cotton bag.

Anna Roberti has imagined a large canvas on which each visitor can leave his or her own "footprint" using cold-extracted dyes from plant elements as colors and leaves of all kinds and types as stamps. Come and color with nature!

Designed and led by Anna Roberti, botanist
Starting from observing the terracottas and ceramics in Camoni's works, we will grind colored powders and mix them with water and clay. Together we will rough out logs with our hands and wait for the heat to dry them; then we will use them as colored chalks in different hues that we can take home to unleash our imagination.

Come try lots of clay chalks in different colors and textures specially made by Anna Roberti! In the outdoor spaces of Pirelli HangarBicocca you can make your own drawing by choosing from the many chalks available for the public.

Designed and led by Justin Randolph Thompson, artist, musician and performer
Beginning with artist Nari Ward's use of building materials such as copper, steel and concrete in his exhibition "Ground Break," we explore the sonic dimension of vibration and discover rhythm in the world around us. Through attentive listening and our imagination let's have fun shaping what we hear by making new soundscapes together!

Justin Randolph Thompson has imagined a booth for creating sounds from the vibrations of a wide variety of objects that can be played and listened to through a special device to create rhythmic landscapes that shape what we hear around us!

Summer camp with the artist

For children aged 7-11

The new project for summer campuses entitled "Terracotta Armies" is developed around themes that focus on the wonder of the unexpected, the passion for archaeology, the playful relationship between the creation of an infinite multitude of characters and a fragile material such as terracotta, and the endless possibilities of storytelling combined with the transformative capabilities of clay.

Conceived and developed by Chiara Camoni together with the collective Centro di Sperimentazione and the Arts Tutors of Pirelli HangarBicocca, the project comes to life precisely from the temporary exhibition "Call and Gather. Sisters. Moths and Flame Twisters. Lioness Bones, Snakes and Stones." by Chiara Camoni, which tells of her connection with nature, people, everyday objects, but also with the passing of time: walking among her works, in fact, it's like moving among different eras of history with a few leaps into the worlds of fairy tales and magic.

"Terracotta Armies" repeats for three weeks, each dedicated to a particular age group, Monday through Friday from 8.30AM to 5.30PM.

On June 29 and 30 from 10.30AM to 6.30PM all the sculptures created during the three-week campus will come together in Pirelli HangarBicocca and will be visible to all visitors!
