The dish likely has a rich brown color due to the soy sauce and caramelization during frying. It is expected to have a savory, tangy aroma from the soy sauce and calamansi, with a strong garlic fragrance. Tapang Taal is expected to have a savory, umami flavor from the soy sauce, a tangy kick from the calamansi, sweetness from the sugar, and a robust garlic taste. To help our tapa makers market this product, what are the suggestions we can give them to further improve their packaging and extend its shelflife? SERP-P NEW PUBLICATION: Role of Women and Coastal Livelihood in the Small-scale Fisheries (SSF) of Lupon and Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental   Published by the Davao Oriental State University, this paper shed light on various roles of women in their coastal communities of Lupon and Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental. The study higlights how various activities undertaken by these women contribute significantly to the fisheries sector.   It revealed that women in these coastal communities played a significant role in the fisheries. Beyond their direct contributions, their work empowers families and strengthens the local economy. In recognition of their crucial role, the study emphasizes the need for further empowering these women. Farmers and scientists in the Philippines slam "colonial mindset" behind the articles on #GoldenRice court ruling from The Guardian and The Observer. MASIPAG - a farmer-led network of more than 500 farmers’ organizations, Non-government organizations, and scientists - said: "We urge the Guardian to respect the agency and knowledge of the Filipino people. Our approach to solving VAD [Vitamin A Deficiency] is holistic, treating it as a structural issue rather than relying on a single technological fix such as Golden Rice. The portrayal of corporate-led solutions as superior not only undermines our efforts but also perpetuates a colonial mindset that we must move beyond." https://lnkd.in/eMf_5y-6 An article in the Guardian on 25th May and amplified in the Observer's editorial the next day repeated wild and unsubstantiated claims about the potential for the genetically engineered rice to provide a solution to VAD and prevent thousands of deaths. The claims were made by "scientists" who are directly linked to the development and promotion of the crop yet the publications made no attempts to contextualise this. MASIPAG: "The Guardian’s article incorrectly and deceivingly claims Greenpeace “convinced” the court to halt Golden Rice operations. The case details are public knowledge, yet The Guardian ignored these facts, akin to a colonialist disregarding the true narrative of the locals. The truth is that the Philippine court halted the production of Golden Rice “until such time that the concerned respondent government agencies submit proof of safety and compliance with all legal requirements.” This decision was based on evidences submitted by both petitioners and respondents, statements of witnesses and scientific experts, and the country’s Constitution, not merely Greenpeace’s influence.... "Our voices and stories must be heard. The Filipino people possess the knowledge and resources to address our own challenges. We have been fighting tooth and nail for more than two decades, on all fronts, because we know that Filipino farmers and the people in general deserve better. We also fight because, to us, rice is life. We invite The Guardian to engage with local perspectives and to consider the broader socio-economic, political, and cultural contexts in their reporting." International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) the Philippines. Researchers identify genes for low glycemic index and high protein in rice, using genetics and artificial intelligence classification methods. Collaborating institutions: University of California, Davis, US, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Germany, and the Center of Plant Systems Biology, Bulgaria. 30 August 2024. Key: The results could help address growing incidence of diabetes and need for adequate protein intake for hundreds of millions of people at risk, many of whom live in South Asia and Central Africa. Excerpt: The study, recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), revealed a superior set of lines that exhibited ultra-low GI (below 45%) with an unprecedented protein level (15.99), which is twice the content usually found in conventional milled rice. Rice varieties with higher protein content may contribute to slower digestion and absorption rates, potentially helping control blood glucose levels, further enhancing its ultra-low GI characteristics. “Collectively, these findings underscore the stacked potential and benefits of low GI and high protein rice to offer a substantial source of protein and essential amino acids such as lysine for consumers, particularly in regions where rice is a dietary staple,” said Dr. Nese Sreenivasulu, corresponding author of the paper and Principal Scientist at the IRRI Grain Quality and Nutrition Center. He adds the lines included in the study also generated yields comparable to existing high-yielding rice varieties. The healthier rice lines were developed by intercrossing an inbred variety from Samba Mahsuri and the amylose extender of IR36. The results could help address the growing incidence of diabetes and the need for adequate protein intake for hundreds of millions of people at risk. Note: Globally, about 537 million adults suffer from diabetes, and the number is expected to grow to 783 million by 2045. Low- and middle-income countries account for more than three-quarters of diabetes incidences, with Asia accounting for 60 percent of the global diabetic population. High-protein rice may help boost the diets and health of half a billion protein-deficient consumers, many of whom live in South Asia and Central Africa. University of the Philippines scientists develop micro-satellite markers for maliputo fish University of the Philippines Diliman Institute of Biology's Shenna Kate Torres, Verinna Charisse Mangonon, and Maria Theresa Tengco, along with project leader Dr. Brian Santos of both IB and the Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI), developed the microsatellite markers for monitoring and #conservation efforts. With its large size and excellent meat quality, #maliputo has been cultured in captivity through the initiatives of the Department of Agriculture-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. When captured in marine waters, this fish is known as "talakitok," and in freshwater, it is called "maliputo." Depending on the water source, maliputo can cost between P400 and P700 per kilogram, the DA-NFRDI said. “As it became a target fish, studying its biology is important to prevent overexploitation and to ensure sustainable aquaculture practices,” Torres was quoted as saying by the UP Diliman College of Science. According to the US National Human Genome Research Institute, a microsatellite ''refers to a short segment of DNA, usually one to six or more base pairs in length, that is repeated multiple times in succession at a particular genomic location.'' “#Molecularmarkers, like microsatellites, act as tools to identify which populations are adapting well to their environment and to determine how different groups are related to each other," Torres said.
