Indigenous Peoples are increasingly at the forefront of the impacts of higher temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns. This Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) report examines how the rights, roles and knowledge of indigenous men, women, youth, and persons with disabilities are addressed in national-level climate policies and plans in 10 countries in Asia. Localization in Agri-Food Development How can we ensure that local farmers and agribusinesses truly lead the development of their food systems? What are the challenges and opportunities you've encountered? The Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) in the Philippines has empowered local organic farmers. As of 2023, 87 PGS groups involving 1,742 farmers have been established, certifying 2,315 hectares for organic production, reducing certification costs by 60% compared to third-party systems.

The Growing Gen Z Gender Ideological Gap and What It Means for the Philippines [Check items 3&4. Might explain some qualms between families and friends during elections.] Recent studies show a widening ideological divide between Generation Z men and women (ages 18-30). This global trend, supported by the Gender Social Norms Index, reflects how gender norms and societal structures influence young people's beliefs, behaviors, and interactions. Here's what you need to know: 1. Divergent Political Leanings - Young women increasingly align with progressive ideologies, advocating for gender equality, climate action, and social justice. Meanwhile, young men are gravitating towards conservative stances, focusing on traditional values and economic practicalities. 2. Global Phenomenon- This ideological divide spans continents, with countries like South Korea and Tunisia showing stark divides. Surveys indicate that these differences are more pronounced among Gen Z compared to older generations. 3. Influence of Social Media- Social media algorithms amplify these divides by curating content tailored to users’ existing beliefs. This "algorithmic sorting" fosters echo chambers that reinforce divergent worldviews. 4. Impact on Political Campaigns - Political strategies now focus on addressing these gendered differences, with tailored messaging and platforms aimed at engaging either young men or women based on their distinct priorities and interests. 5. Cultural Implications - Beyond politics, this gap influences relationships, workplace dynamics, and societal cohesion. In the Philippines, where familial and community ties are central, this divide could reshape generational interactions and decision-making processes. Based on the 2023 UNDP Gender Social Norms Index, 99.5% of all Filipinos holds at least one gender bias against women, such as views on leadership roles, education, or family responsibilities. This index highlights how deeply entrenched biases can exacerbate gendered ideological gaps. Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay! In the Philippines, USAID is working with government and community partners to protect ecosystems critical to sustaining water supply services. USAID’s assistance, through the Safe Water Activity, enabled roughly 1,400 community members and government officials to plant more than 58,000 indigenous trees in the Bago Watershed in Negros Occidental. USAID is also supporting learning exchanges between indigenous groups to promote best practices for protecting native tree species valued for resin and timber, like the Almaciga, from further degradation. At the recent Indigenous Voices in Asia Network (IVAN) Exchange, organized by Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact and supported by East-West Management Institute and Open Society Foundations, participants from across the Asia-Pacific region highlighted initiatives focused on reviving indigenous languages, advocating for justice in reporting, and utilizing social media platforms to share their stories. The National Rural Women’s Coalition through the support of the Office for Women is attending the Asia and Pacific Civil Society and Ministerial review of Beijing 30 Review. 17-18 November forum is for the 300 civil society advocates creating themes important to the Asia and Pacific that will feed through to the Commission on the Status of Women. We have been working with the sub-regional caucus of the Pacific. We have attended workshops on Rural Women and Story telling as a powerful way to advocate. We have heard from UN Women and Asia and Pacific Steering Committee on the opportunities and barriers to ache if gender equality. El Niño's impact goes beyond disrupting companies and schools. It has caused class cancellations and flexible work arrangements to address heat-related illnesses. Additionally, our agricultural sector faces significant challenges. I recently spoke at the 'El Niño Resilience Forum for Microenterprises,' organized by ARISE Philippines and Restart-Micro-Enterprise, Inc. (RestartME), renowned for their disaster and resilience management. During the forum, we discussed the wide-ranging effects of climate change on every Filipino's life. The situation emphasizes the urgent need for both government and private sector support for agriculture and microenterprises. Small farmers and microentrepreneurs, most vulnerable to economic shocks and natural disasters, require urgent assistance. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) play a crucial role here. They can help clients cope with El Niño and climate change by encouraging savings, offering emergency funds and microinsurance, promoting environmental awareness, and participating in community projects such as tree-planting and rainwater harvesting. These initiatives are vital for building resilience and reducing the impacts of El Niño and climate change on vulnerable communities. Join us in combating El Niño and climate change.
