Surge in Philippine Exports Signals Positive Economic Outlook - The unexpectedly strong growth in merchandise exports and imports at the beginning of the second quarter bodes well for the brighter economic prospects of the Philippines, according to Deutsche Bank Research. In a recent report, the German bank's research arm highlighted a 26.4 percent year-on-year surge in April export sales, marking the fastest increase since October 2022 and surpassing the market expectation of 13 percent growth. "Electronics exports constituted the majority (70 percent) of this growth, driven by the ongoing global recovery in the electronics sector," Deutsche Bank Research explained. Digital banks in the Philippines are now facing growing challenges in maintaining asset quality as they strive to extend financial services to underserved populations. A recent report by Fitch Ratings highlights a sharp rise in non-performing loans, with the NPL ratio jumping from 5.9% to 14.1% in just 18 months. This deterioration underscores the complexities of lending to borrowers with little or no credit history. Despite the risks, the potential for growth is immense. Fitch remains optimistic that digital banks will improve their risk management over time, especially as they gather more customer data. From January 1 to December 7 last year, 19,884 cybercrimes were recorded, of which 11,071 cases, or 55.67 percent, were online scams. Filipinos have lost at least P155.2 million due to scams in the first eight months of 2023 alone. And, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, the country had the highest cases of financial phishing attempts in Southeast Asia from February to April 2022. GoTyme Bank keeps its FAQ on scams updated on its app and social media, including next steps in the event of a scam.
