Improverished consumers and what does it mean for #FMCG players? Personal savings rate hitting the all time low, while at the same time credit card debt is near all time high signals that consumers are poor and may be nearing their limits with unprecedented cost of living and assets inflation far outpacing their income growth (excl. top decile) Most of the FMCG players rely on a strong middle class, and the purchasing power of the bottom 90% of the consumers across the major economies got visibly poorer, as the vast majority of newly 'created' (printed) wealth got accumulated by the very rich (>66% of all the wealth 'printed' since 2020 ended up with the top 1%) that are unlikely to drastically increase their spend on CPG (how much more shampoo can Jeff Bezos buy?) If so far the price elasticity was low (low to no volume decline) it was driven by several forces that may well be about to expire, as many metrics are hitting the respective lows/ highs not seen since 2008/09 downturn Maintaining the pre-pandemics consumption will result tricky for many consumers. Beverage brands—learn what top acquirers like Coca Cola are buying through their corporate transcripts   Coca Cola executive management openly share 3 key themes in how they're thinking about the brand portfolio at the CAGNY consumer conference in February '24:   1. There's still ammo to acquire 💲   --- Coca Cola plans to increase investments into its brand portfolio in 2024 up to $2.2 billion.   --- The company still sits well below its net debt leverage target of 2.5x (1.7x in 2023) => access and appetite to acquire more brands.   --- It's clear from their concurrent divesture of bottling plants that they want to double down on the asset-lite approach with brands. 2. Focus on buying fewer, more scalable brands 📈   --- The company is turning away from buying smaller brands to only fit 1 or 2 markets.   --- Management is making sure "inorganic plays have got a higher probability for a scalable impact" so that its cost base is more efficient. 3. Keep betting on sparkling beverages 🥤   --- The CEO, James Quincy, continues to stay excited about sparkling beverages and has bets across all the subcategories like caffeinated, zero sugar, and all forms of flavors.   --- He sees strong growth continuing without much in the way to stop it. One of the keys to marketing success, particularly in the CPG, is synergizing their campaigns across multiple channels. With CPGs brands stretching their ad spending to drive a greater impact, it it important to ensure their media investments are effective and drive value. Television has long proven to be a valuable channel for CPG brands, even as many advertisers are turning to digital alternatives. Despite shifting customer habits, television can be useful, especially when paired with another, more modern channel. For instance, TikTok has seen a surge among younger audiences, and when paired with TV, brands can reach across upper and lower funnel metrics at the same time. #Marketing #Branding #CPGs

Two key reasons behind the world largest FMCG companies top-line 'outperformance' in Q1 2024 (as 'only' 33% of them missed their top-line guidance vs 50% in Q4 2023): i) First & mostly, 73% of them lowered their guidance to reflect their 'long-term algo' (mostly in the 3-5% range) whereas they benefited on average of a still historically high pricing gains in Q1 (+4.5% in Q1 vs. ~1.5% over 2000-2019). This gain will now reduce for most (FMCG companies exposed to cocao are an exception) 2) Second, FMCG companies have started to spend back on marketing (A&P). Looking at their gross margin & EBIT development, we estimate that on average A&P increased by nearly ~100 bps. 5 things you need to know about Health and Wellness in Asia Pacific! Last week, I had the privilege to represent NielsenIQ at Growth Asia Summit 2024, Asia’s biggest event for Food, Beverage and Nutrition. The 3 day event was held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore with speakers and attendees coming from all around the globe. 🏥Health trends - The top concern for APAC Consumers is Increasing Food Prices whilst Health is #4. When we double click on health concerns we find that sleep is the top health concern in APAC, with mental health #2. Sleep and Mental Health related products are a huge opportunity to innovate, whilst managing the increase in prices and the pressure it puts on consumers also can help these concerns. 🏃‍♂️Sports Nutrition - Sports drinks are growing +9% in APAC and is growing as fast as +17% in Vietnam. 55% of APAC consumers claim to have gym/yoga/sports membership though 16% claim that they intend to decrease their gym spend in 2024. 🥚Protein trends - Eggs are the #1 means for APAC Consumers to get protein. We introduced the Eggquivalised index (yes that’s not a typo!) where we looked at the performance of different protein brands in APAC based on the amount of protein they contain but equivalised into eggs! As the average egg has 6g of protein, thus we looked at brands having from 1 egg’s worth of protein right through to those with 5 eggs’ worth of protein. 💡Innovation trends - In 11 out of 14 markets, “Improves Gut Health” is an unmet need for beverages with consumers stating that this of high importance but the current products available do not meet their needs. Microbiomes was a key area of interest with scientists, nutritionalists and academics supporting this insight by highlighting, at the Growth Asia summit, that this will become a huge area of growth in the next few years. ⌚️Technology trends - 89% of APAC consumers claim that they would change their consumer behaviour based on technology (wearables, DNA testing). Wearables with EDA (Electro Dermal Activity - to measure stress) are growing +77%. The rise in tech wearables will have a profound effect on changes in consumer behaviour, thus understanding these trends will be key for FMCG companies. Genuine question. Has there been a better time to invest in CPG? 1️⃣ CPG is a resilient sector (demand for F&B is inelastic). 2️⃣ Significant macro tailwinds from consumers spanning all ages, ethnicities and gender are replenishing demand for new and BFY products. 3️⃣ CPG has a uniquely supportive ecosystem to foster continued innovation. 4️⃣ Multiple channels through which to scale (retail, DTC, foodservice). 5️⃣ Ability to rapidly scale, early stage CPG can grow 100-500% first few years. 6️⃣ Diverse paths to exit; strategics, private equity, public markets, and a fast developing market to pursue interim exit opportunities thru secondary sales. 7️⃣ Smaller exits becoming more plentiful. Strategic/PE acquisitions rebounding. 8️⃣ The 'grow at all costs' era is ancient history, entrepreneurs are increasingly prioritizing capital efficiency, hatching more resilient companies with healthier balance sheets that are more attractive to venture and growth capital. 9️⃣ Valuations are favorable and will lead to more lucrative returns. 🔟 Downturn in quantity of innovations has created a more favorable environment to zero in on quality startups. 1️⃣ 1️⃣ Decrease in supply leads to a more competitive acquisition market, driving up the price Strategics and PE will pay for a valuable CPG property. Angel investors have more to gain in these market conditions than anyone. Average returns can be 5-15X. Up to 50X on seed investment is not far-fetched. 👆 I figure these are some of the reasons why we're seeing a big uptick in membership at The Angel Group, especially from investors outside of CPG. One other reason 👇 The Angel Group has created an especially advantaged environment to plug into early stage opportunities that become breakout successes. Between member and select partner investments (Chris Robb and I), we invested in Poppi at sub $1mm revenue, Bachans was pre-revenue, Goodles was just entering the market, Siete was going by the name of "Must Be Nutty", and Bubble Skincare was solely an online business. Over the past 12 months, Proper Good, Aura Bora, Barcode, and Rind Snacks (to name a few) have experienced awesome growth and value accretion. Our current pipeline is abundant with impressive innovations and founders.
