CEBU PEDESTRIANIZATION: IS THE GOVERNMENT JUMPING THE GUN? What is walking along the streets of Cebu City like for you? Would you ever consider replacing commuting with walking all the way to your destination? This year, the Cebu City government unveiled plans for the pedestrianization of the city through the widening of sidewalks and the reduction of road space in Downtown Cebu. This will be done for the "Heritage Loop" which will connect Colon Street with the proposed ramp from Barangay Ermita to the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway, the Carbon Public Market and the City Hall Plaza.  This may improve public safety and mobility for Cebuanos and visitors of the island, but many have pointed out some concerns about the project. - UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS Summertime in the Philippines can be scorching hot, which could lead to discomfort or worse, heat stroke. The rainy season, on the other hand, brings frequent flooding, especially at flood prone areas. - CRIMES Citizens have voiced worries about their safety because of rampant petty crimes like pickpocketing, theft and robbery. Local police have confirmed that crime has lessened, but many still fear walking along the city's streets and alleyways. - POSSIBLE ROAD CLOSURES The Heritage Loop may require road closures, which may not be ideal considering the ongoing construction of the BRT Terminals. Rerouting may be challenging for motorists, especially since more people are still reliant on cars and public transportation these days. - LOSING COLON'S BUSINESS DISTRICT Lessening vehicular traffic may directly affect businesses in Colon. The street's two-way driving scheme was implemented to provide additional jeepney routes for the convenience of passengers. These public transport routes are essential for local businesses to gain customers on a regular basis. WHAT THE GOVERNMENT CAN DO The Cebu City government can borrow from Cebu Business Park and IT Park's Car-Free Sundays, wherein cars are not allowed on specific roads. They must also go over the downtown area's drainage system to address potential flooding in the area.  Lastly, consider putting security personnel and cameras to monitor any suspicious behavior. **** It is understandable why so many are concerned about the pedestrianization of the city. If implemented the right way, the Heritage Loop could improve many aspects and things to do in downtown Cebu.
