Empowering Women is Smart Business

About us

The Business Coalition for Women is a group of companies who are working together to drive positive change for women and businesses in Papua New Guinea. The Business Coalition for Women helps PNG’s private sector to recruit, retain, develop, and promote women – as employees, leaders, customers and business partners. Member organisations have exclusive access to relevant and practical tools, model policies, good practices, case studies and other resources to help them make the most of their female talent, while promoting more opportunities for women’s economic empowerment and career development. Registered businesses of all sizes operating in PNG are invited to join the Coalition. Coalition members know that gender equality is good business. They also know that overcoming the challenges faced by women in the PNG workforce goes beyond individual firms and are ready to be part of history in the making.

The government is already reviewing the Employment Act – a good step. Our findings support making key amendments being considered, including: 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: ● Introduce paid maternity leave (currently the Act includes a 6-week unpaid maternity leave). ● Introduce paid paternity leave for fathers (currently, there is no paternity leave). ● Strengthen anti-discrimination protection for pregnancy/maternity (e.g. prohibit dismissal of pregnant workers). Our findings suggest that improving care policies (like the above) will help women and men enter work and work more – and that these measures will be popular, including among men. 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: ● Sections 98 of the Act prohibit women’s work in underground mining work and heavy labour. ● Section 99 prohibits women from working at night (between 6pm and 6am) in industrial work. ● These sections should be removed. (Simultaneously, employers should adequately guarantee safety of workers) Our findings suggest that a sizable number of women (31%) would be interested in these jobs. For the remainder (who aren’t interested), they would be interested – if safety concerns were addressed. Visit our website to read more https://lnkd.in/g_ainiY8

Congratulations to Bel isi PNG and the Santos Foundation for taking home the Corporate Impact Award – Targeted Program at the highly-respected Platts Global Energy Awards in New York! This program, backed by the Santos Foundation, is committed to changing attitudes towards family and sexual violence, and supporting survivors in Papua New Guinea. The initiative has supported more than 2,000 women and children and provided education sessions to 5,000 private sector employees. The Bel isi PNG program is a fantastic example of the many programs that Santos Ltd and Santos Foundation support through a $US10 million annual commitment. Our findings suggest that Papua New Guineans (men and women, rural and urban) largely have similar work ambitions – including to start businesses, increase their salaries, and get a better job. Policies to improve access to finance is key – especially those who aspire to start a business. Enhancing skills – including TVET, digital-literacy skills, and number and literacy skills – are also key, especially for those who aspire to increase their salaries. The government should ensure both women and men benefit from these policies. Visit our website to read the full report https://lnkd.in/g_ainiY8
